   We happened upon this history home on a Sunday drive along the old Mohawk Turnpike (Rte 5). Fort Johnson was built in 1749 by Sir William Johnson to house his family. He fortified it during the French and Indian war. There is a visitors center in the back and we watched an orientation video (less than 10 mins) before being guided through the main building and the grounds. Extensive effort has been put into the building and grounds, including artifacts from local history (Amsterdam, NY).
