The Gun Battery located at Gunnison Beach was original built in 1904 for coastal defense and was named after Captain John W. Gunnison. In 1943 the cement platforms were raised and mounted with two 6 inch diameter Barbette guns for use as coastal defense through WWII. Interesting to see what they used to protect our coastal waters in WWII. This is an old site and the cement is eroding and in need of repair as is much of Fort Hancock’s area, but it is still worth checking out on your way to the beach. Parking is available in the Gunnison Beach lot. As a Veteran I appreciate what the park service does to maintain our country’s history. See more..

Our boy scout troop participated in an educational workshop hosted by NJ Sea Grant Consortium. The program ran from 10 AM to 3 PM on a Saturday with a generous lunch break. Our host taught us about how Sandy Hook was formed, what types of plants and animals live there, and the importance/relevance of the bay/estuary and salt marshes to marine life. The scouts were provided with waders and got to fish in the bay with nets and plankton strainers. We got to look at the plankton, crabs, fishes, and other creatures at the lab building. We also learned about the importance of testing for disolved oxygen and salinity and the scouts got hands on experience working with lab equipment. If your school, scout or youth group would enjoy a day at the beach learning about oceans, marine science or related physical sciences, give NJ Sea Grant a call. Bring walking shoes, extra socks to change into and a camera. You'll have a great time. See more..
