  1. 5.0 John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Painted Hills Unit (94 reviews)
    - One of the most beautiful places in the world!
    Spent 1-2 hours National Parks

Painted Hills is one of the most amazing places we've ever seen and it feels like you're in a different world when you're here. The natural landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful and it's an absolute joy to explore this area. We visited during a heat wave in 2017 and it was 115 degrees in the area, but that didn't stop us from enjoying every minute here. I recommend bringing plenty of water and make sure that your car has a full tank of gas, just because it's remote and a desert. I highly, highly recommend Painted Hills and it's still one of the most amazing placed we've ever visited! See more..
  2. 5.0 Blue Basin Overlook Trail (3 reviews)
    - One long trail and one short trail - Both excellent
    Spent 2-3 hours Hiking Trails
    Blue Basin Overlook Trail image
The Blue Basin has the longest trail in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. There are two trails here - The loop trail is 3.6 miles long and has a pretty strenuous climb to the top of the Blue Basin overlook. The overlook provides an expansive view of the colorful (bluish) basin. The second trail is the 0.8 mile (one-way) Island in Time Trail, which provides closeup views of the geologic formations and the blue/green colored rocks. This interpretive trail has elaborate displays of fossils found in the area. It is one of the best short trails in the National Monument. The Blue Basin is an active fossil research area for the Paleontology Center. When I visited in June, the loop trail was easily navigable, but it could be slippery, especially downhill, if there has been recent precipitation. Also, there is no shade on the trail. But the trail is very enjoyable. See more..
  3. 4.5 Thomas Condon Paleontology Center (42 reviews)
    - Very informative and educational
Spent < 1 hour Natural History Museums
    Thomas Condon Paleontology Center image
The Thomas Condon Paleontology Center in Kimberly performs dual functions - First as a Visitor Center for the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument and secondly, as a paleontology research facility for the fossils excavated in the area. The Center has awesome colorful murals, fossil exhibits, and a see-thru paleontology laboratory. The staff is very helpful with suggestions for visiting the three Units of the National Monument. When I visited there one early morning in June, there was ample parking. See more..
  4. 4.0 Sheep Rock (2 reviews)

Quand on remonte la vallée en direction du visitor center, on longe sur la droite d'imposantes falaises à la aux roches curieusement dessinées et sculptées. Cela donne un paysage original et spectaculaire. See more..
  5. 3.5 James Cant Ranch Historic District (2 reviews)
    - Sheep Ranch History of 1900's
    Spent 1-2 hours Ranches
James Cant Ranch Historic District image
The James Cant Ranch Historic District in the Sheep Rock Unit of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is an interesting place with beautiful scenery to learn about ranch life in the early 1900's. The district has several interesting features including the main house (which was closed when I visited in June), a sheep shearing barn, and a variety of ranch equipment in outdoor display. There is a short nature trail, but I did not find it quite informative. The place is worth a stop, and perhaps it would be more interesting when the house is open for visits inside. See more..
