    The Coronado Ferry Landing image
This was something new that we had never done before in the numerous years we have been visiting San Diego. The boat ride was short, about 30 mins, and walking around the island was fun. Took the local bus to the Hotel Del Coronado and walked through the grounds and hotel. This is where they filmed Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Considered to be one of the greatest films of all time. Although I heard that they only filmed outside the hotel. Inside scenes were filmed at the studio. They had just recently refinished all of the wood work in the lobby when we visited in October 2022. There are some quante little outdoor eating spots that have views of the bay. Not many people around in mid October. A few of the establishments were close however. See more..

Parking is usually easy just be patient. On the second day my son did get stung by a stingray and was in a world of hurt. However it is common and happens to the best of them. - Beautiful Park in the heart of Coronado
    Parks
    Spreckels Park image
Took a little drive today from Encinitas to Balboa park and decided to check out Coronado. I haven’t been there more than 1-2 times in 23 years of living in SoCal. Anyways decided to check out some local parks and we stopped at Spreckeles Park. It was very nice and got the feel of what it would be like to live in Coronado. Anyways the park is very nicely manicured with flowers and trees in the park and along the street. There is a huge gazebo and people jogging kids playing in a very updated playground. Lots of swings and slides. Also there were artists selling their artwork by the roadside. It felt really folky and something out of a movie. Great park to see how the other half lives :) See more..

    Centennial Park image
Easily accessible from our hotel, this little park is the gateway to the ferry to San Diego, the Bayshore Bikeway (which is great for walking along as well). It was also a wonderful place to meet locals and learn about the area. It affords a great vista of the San Diego skyline, from the International Airport to the northeast, the USS Midway, the city proper, the Convention Centre, the Coronado Bridge, and towards the south and Mexico. Pleasantly, it was also a safe place to walk, even at night! See more..

    Downtown Coronado image
From the Hotel Del, down Orange Avenue (until hitting the large green expanse of park) is the heart of Coronado's Downtown stretch. The architecture is an eclectic mix of Art Deco and quirky store fronts as well as little holes in the wall (like High Tide Bottle shop that makes he BEST pizza in all of Coronado!) are a visual treat. Think ice cream for the eye balls, that is how fun it is! In the general area can be found Baum's historic home where some of the Oz books were written (a must-see to walk by as these people living here have a sense of humor) and there is also a round-about monument to military sacrifices, lovely old homes, and all the vitality of a lively downtown area. Spent 1-2 hours Churches & Cathedrals
    Sacred Heart Catholic Church image
My husband and I recently got married at Sacred Heart, and it was just beautiful – everything we had hoped and waited for over two years of COVID postponements. The church is lovely, intimate, and inviting, and we so appreciated the kind assistance we received from Anne Rising, Fr. Jim Rafferty, and Claudia Drachenberg leading up to the big day. Although we live out of state and are not parishioners, the church accommodated us as my elderly grandmother lives in San Diego and I grew up going to mass at Sacred Heart during holidays. I have many special memories at the church and felt so fortunate to have been married there as well. Thank you for everything! See more..

Old menus, souvenirs, annual Christmas ornaments and similar items. Many interesting photos of the early days of the hotel from the late 19th Century, and a collection of photos of famous guests at the Hotel. There is not a lot here and it takes less than 30 minutes to see everything, but it’s free and easy to visit - even if you are not a hotel guest - so you might as well take a look if you are already in the area.
