  3. 5.0 John Parker Hale Statue (1 review)
    - One of the Greatest Inscriptions Ever
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
Visitors note statues of Franklin Pierce (president), Daniel Webster (senator), and John Stark (general), but many times when passing through the State House grounds (I live in Concord), I have had to expressly ask them to take at the statue of John P. Hale, who, as a leading member of the Free Soil Party and its presidential candidate (against Pierce!), became anathema to the Democratic Party in the state. The inscription on the statue is quite simply one of the most moving ever composed. See more..

  22. 4.0 President Franklin Pierce Tomb (38 reviews)
    - Nice resting place for our 14th President
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    President Franklin Pierce Tomb image
As we tour our country, we make it a point to visit the Presidential cemeteries - it almost drives our touring now, as only five stops remain. The Pierce family grave is rather modest but nicely maintained, and certainly distinguishable from other grave markers. Old North cemetery dates back to 1730, and as such other markers are not in the best shape. Pierce had a sad family life, as their first son died in infancy and his resting place is unknown. Two of the other sons are with Franklin and Jane. Frankie died at four from Typhus, and Benjie from a train accident. Jane had poor health following the deaths of her children and died from tuberculosis. On October 08, 1869, President Pierce died at the age of 64. His death was caused by complications brought about by liver cirrhosis from his heavy drinking in later years. Franklin Pierce is linked in genealogical records to Barbara Pierce Bush - First Lady of President George H. W. Bush - quite a trivia notation. See more..

  29. 4.0 Fort Eddy Plaza (1 review)
    - SHOPPING PLAZA CLOSE TO ROUTES I-93 & I-393
    Spent 1-2 hours Shopping Malls
    Fort Eddy Plaza image
This shopping plaza is conveniently located off Exit 14 of Route I-93 and near the junction Route I-393/US Route 202. It has service businesses, stores and restaurants. The anchor store is Books-A-Million which carries books for the whole family. There’s a large children’s section. One will also find games, puzzles, plush characters, and toys throughout the store. There is a smaller section with books for teens. On my visit this time, I shopped at Books-A-Million where I got two nice books at deep discounts. Other stores of interest to travelers include GameStop, Staples, GNC, Eastern Mountain Sports for outdoor gear, Rite Aid for forgotten or used-up toiletries, OTC medicines, and first aid items. The Shaw’s Supermarket is not only good for snacks and beverages, but it also has a Citizens Bank ATM inside for emergency or extra cash. There’s a Supercuts where one can get a quick haircut. There are two eateries - Five Guys Burgers & Fries and Moritomo Japanese Restaurant. Fort Eddy Plaza is across from the L.L. Bean Outlet and Uno Pizzeria & Grill. The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is about 2 miles away. I rate the Fort Eddy Plaza at 4.50 for its convenient location with easy access to highways and the variety of businesses there.
