Each summer we go up to Ruidoso for a day to enjoy the cool of the mountains. We have never gone further than Ruidoso, but this time we went on to the small town of Capitan. Capitan is a short scenic drive past Ruidoso and well worth the drive. Drive into the center of town where you will find what appears to be a renovated bank that is now a folk and fine art store. We have lived in the southwest on and off and visited many times and are used to the typical southwest art stores. This one is different and well worth the side trip. The store is called Oso Art, from folk to fine. See more..

This is a publicly run library that depends on volunteers and donations. They have it all right here. Beautifully maintained inside and out. The outdoor shaded garden area is a plus. See more..

We were on the last leg of a 1900+ mile return drive from Knoxville, TN to Phoenix leaving Roswell, NM early in the morning and pulled up to the Museum an hour before they were scheduled to open. The manager happened to be nearby and stopped and actually apologized that they were not opening for another hour but graciously suggested we use the gate by the side of the building to visit Smokey's grave. There is also an excellent memorial to fallen fire fighters. Thank You! See more..
  4. 4.0 Smokey Bear Museum and Gift Shop (103 reviews)

I learned the name is Smokey bear not Smokey the bear. Smokey was orphaned in a forest fire clinging to a burnt tree in the early 50s. He became the spokes bear for the next 26 years, retired for 8 months at National zoo in dc and passed of old age. An act of Congress was needed to send the remains back to nm where he was born. A great museum, gift shop, exhibition about forest management, fire fighting, and caring for nature. There’s garden with various eco systems that lead to Smokey’s grave. See more..
