I can’t think of a single thing that did not exceed expectation. This was our third company retreat with Dan and his team and my second time attending. The attention to detail in planning and execution are flawless. Dan and Caleb have knowledge of the area that is unparalleled and the food is what you would expect at a fine dining restaurant (only under the beautiful western sky). See more..

  5. 5.0 Sumpter Valley Railroad (1 review)
    - Steam Train Rides are Always Good
Sunday: 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM Spent 2-3 hours Scenic Railroads
I had some doubts about this ride because of a couple of less than favorable on line comments but I found it to be an excellent choice. It is a bit short altogether but they are living within the limits of an all volunteer effort. Wife and I took our son, his son and two other grandchildren for the ride. G-Kids ages were 6 yrs and 2 @ 15 yrs. They all enjoyed the ride very much. On our visit, the train was pulled by a wood-burning Heisler Engine which was a new experience for me. We bought cab rides for each direction of the trip so all the grand kids could be where the action was. The cab limit is 3 persons, one of which must be an adult. We boarded in McEwan, OR and each way is about 45 minutes with a 45 layover in Sumpter, OR. That is the best trip since there are a few shops in Sumpter but nothing in McEwan which makes for a long 45 minutes. The people, all volunteers, are friendly and helpful. Some trips, ours, had a "Holdup" which the kids loved. In Sumpter some of the bandits gave horse rides to the little ones. That was a big hit. One commenter in another site complained about the piles and piles of rocks along the tracks. These are hundreds of thousands of tons of debris left by a dredge during the gold search days, ending in the 1950's. The huge dredge is still in Sumpter and you should make time or a day to look at it. We plan to go back to do so. If anything, the dredge is a monument to the damage folks can do to the landscape seeking money. This trip is fun. It pales a bit compared to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR in Chama, New Mexico but since that is a seven hour trip through the Rockies any comparison is not fair. I recommend you do the Sumpter Valley RR. See more..

  8. 4.5 Sumpter Valley Railway (42 reviews)
    - A great time riding the rails in Sumpter
    Rail Tours
    Sumpter Valley Railway image
A nice leisurely (about 40 minute) ride from McEwen station to Sumpter. All volunteers on the train were friendly and full of good information. The schedule is helpful when you want to spend a bit of time in Sumpter getting ice cream at the Scoop and Steamer or going to tour the dredge and learn to pan for gold, then catch the train back to McEwen. We went on an off weekend but according to a Sumpter resident there are train "hold-ups" where they stage a mock train robbery with horses and gun-slingers and all. There are the options for open air cars as well as covered cars. This is a steam engine and there is ash and debris that falls so if you don't want to get hit go for the close top car. The whistle might be too loud for babies and very small children. I would definitely recommend this for people heading through Sumpter. See more..

  16. 4.0 Friends of the Sumpter Valley Dredge (1 review)
    - Ghost Town with Mining History
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Ghost Towns
Friends of the Sumpter Valley Dredge image
Sumpter a ghost town with mining history, historic buildings on the Main street and nowadays a population of about 200 and the Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area are situated 30 miles West of Baker City at the base of the Elkhorn Range in the Blue Mountains. Driving into the valley, you see the scenic mountain peaks of the Elkhorns on one side. On the other side, among trees and bushes your eyes will become bigger and bigger. There are piles of gravel, huge mounds of mine dumps, so-called tailings—refuse from the gold rush days. Most of the Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area consists of these tailings. The park´s centerpiece is a five-story vessel known as The Dredge, one of the tools used to dig up the valley floor along the Powder River. It stopped operating in 1954. Another witty thing you will find in the remnants of this little Western style lively hicktown isa signpost “Cannabis Dispensary”! Who would have expected this “innovation” in such a remote wasteland where most of the residents are elders? See more..
