- 5.0 Interdune Boardwalk (12 reviews)
-Perfect Sunrise Spot!
Spent 1-2 hours Scenic Walking Areas
This was our first stop in White Sands National Park. It was an easy walk with lots of information along the way. After stopping here we drove through the park and did the sunset stroll with a ranger. The park is beautiful at sunset and we decided the Dune Boardwalk would be a perfect spot for sunrise pictures the next morning. Did not disappoint! There was another couple there taking pictures too. It was very cold so if you plan to go, dress accordingly. Nice and warm during the day but it is very cold before sunrise. It was 33 degrees when we got to the park at 7 am and sunrise was about 7:25 am. If you are in the area, very worth it to see the sunrise there. See more..

- 5.0 Desert Foothills Park (1 review)
-Great spot in Alamogordo to go for a walk or run
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Parks
Desert Foothiils Park is a very nice park to walk or run, or as we saw once, fly a drone! Towards the end of the road in Alamogordo you find this nice park where there is a lot of parking available and a wide paved path for running and walking. The park is a about a 1.15 mile loop and you can go either direction, but know ahead of time half is uphill and half is downhill! We visited in May and the cacti were beautiful and flowering. Admittedly Alamogordo does not have many attractions, but this is one spot well worth a visiting. See more..

- 4.5 White Sands National Park (69 reviews)
-Great Addition to the National Park System
National Parks
White Sands is now a full fledged National Park and probably the best reason to come to Alamogordo, NM. It is a great companion park to Carlsbad Caverns also in New Mexico. This park is the largest gypsum dune field in the world and it is truly other worldly to visit especially the far reaches in the Alkali Flats Trail. However, be sure to visit at different times of the day. We visited at sunset and in the morning and it was so different. In the morning you are truly blinded by the white sand that is like hiking in fresh snow. At sunset, White Sands is incredible, truly magical. The soft light changes the colors of the sands and the mountains. It is amazing. For me, the sunset experience highlights why White Sands is more than a monument and rightfully designated a national park now. Come to Alamogordo to see this great addition to the park system. -Nice museum full of interesting stories
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Military Museums • Natural History Museums • Art Museums • History Museums
This is a wonderful local museum. The history is easy to follow, and the displays are filled with interesting information. It’s clear the people who run this museum care a lot about their areas history, and it made me want to care too. I was really interested by a lot of the information they included, like the stories about the war and the Trinity site, Alamogordos early history, and the geology of the region (shown with hand crafted dioramas!). - 4.5 Dog Canyon Trail (11 reviews)
-Steep trail, with great views.
Spent More than 3 hours Hiking Trails
I've hiked this trail several times and it's difficult for me at age 80, but worth it. The trail starts out with a steep climb .The south west face is in direct afternoon sun and can be very hot . I usually take two water bottles .There is no water past the trailhead. If you want a shorter hike ,return at the end of the first level meadow. Depending on your conditioning, plan two hours for the shorter hike to the meadow and return. See more..
