Ghost Ranch - O’Keeffe Landscape Tour image
My mom and I went on a trail ride of beautiful Ghost Ranch with our amazing trail guide, Dustin! He was so knowledgeable and engaging as he shared stories about Georgia O’Keefe, Archuleta Brothers, paleontology, and surrounding geography. If you’re a first time rider, no fear! They will help you every step of the ride including demonstrations of how to mount/dismount and they even provide a saddle bag with water! The group stopped for pictures so we have mementos. Our ride went right by Georgia O’Keefe’s house and we could see the landscape that inspired some of her art. The horses were sweet and happy to show us their backyard. 100% recommend this ride and hopefully you are fortunate enough to ride with Dustin. Thanks Ghost Ranch Trail Rides! See more..

    - Worth the splurge

Georgia O'Keeffe Home and Studio image
I was afraid we’d be disappointed because this tour is pretty costly. But I’m so glad we splurged. You meet in the very nice visitor center and take a short bus ride to Georgia O’Keeffe’s home. The tour is limited to six people, so you never feel crowded. I don’t remember the name of our docent, but she was wonderful--informative and knowledgeable. We spent about 20 minutes outside talking about the history of the property and the artist. Then went inside to view portions of the home. The entire tour lasted about an hour. It was worth every penny. The visitor center has a nice gift shop, restrooms, small museum, a short movie featuring people who worked for O’Keeffe reminiscing about what it was like to work for her. 5. 4.5 Ghost Ranch (918 reviews)

    Ghost Ranch image
Painter Georgia O’Keeffe’s former studio and home is now a top-notch education center and retreat. The 21,000-acre estate offers a variety of activities, workshops, and tours. You can also marvel at the estate's natural beauty, with towering and multi-colored cliffs and canyons all around. It is also a great place for hiking—you can even find dinosaur fossils from the Triassic period in the dinosaur quarry on the way to the Kitchen Mesa trail. Ghost Ranch is just 60 miles from Santa Fe, making it a great day trip. Alternatively, you can stay the night as overnight lodging is available. – Tripadvisor See more..
  6. 4.5 Georgia O'Keeffe: Welcome Center (236 reviews)
    - Beautiful country
    Thursday: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Art Museums
    Georgia O'Keeffe: Welcome Center image
Visit the O’Keeffe Welcome Center, gateway to the Georgia O’Keeffe Home and Studio Tour and the spectacular Rio Chama valley. Find us in Abiquiú, 45 miles northwest of Santa Fe. The Georgia O’Keeffe Home and Studio is accessible to the public only by advance reservation March 7 - November 21. Ticket bookings on the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum website. Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) bought her house in Abiquiu in 1945, which is now owned by the Museum. The 5,000-square-foot Spanish Colonial-era Abiquiu compound was in ruins in 1945, and for the next four years, O’Keeffe supervised its restoration, which was carried out by her friend, Maria Chabot. She moved from New York to make New Mexico her permanent home in 1949, and lived either at the Abiquiu or Ghost Ranch houses until 1984, when she moved to Santa Fe. See more..
  7. 4.5 Monastery of Christ in the Desert (125 reviews)
    - One of the most serene places on earth
    Religious Sites
Monastery of Christ in the Desert image
Stayed 3 days for a self-directed retreat and cannot describe how gratifying it was. Heavenly is what first comes to mind. I immersed myself in self reflection, reading, and prayer. One does not have to be Catholic or even identify as religious to benefit from the solitude, environmental quietness, feeling of peace, solitude, and beauty that envelops the monastery. A highlight for me was eating with the monks for the main daily meal and attending a number of prayer services (offices) available. Guests can attend any, all, or none of the services in the chapel which is so beautiful. Silence is expected during meals and on the monastery grounds but permitted in the guesthouse common areas and in an area adjacent to the gift shop. If you are in need of a spiritual uplift or just want to spend a few days away from the noise of society this is it. See more..

    Echo Amphitheater image
We needed a get out and stretch your legs stop and this was the perfect outing regardless of COVID times and not being able to use the facilities. The painted cliffs surrounding the (paved) walk up to the amphitheater do not disappoint as the sun hits different parts and turns the walls various shades. Try your hand at a making an echo or sing a song. It sends shivers down ones spine! Nature at it’s finest... See more..
  9. 4.5 Abiquiu Lake (102 reviews)
    - Enchanting Abiquiu great for SUP or boating
    Bodies of Water
    Abiquiu Lake image
Beautiful, calm lake with a gorgeous mountain backdrop. This is a good lake for SUP, canoeing, & for boating. The water was a good temperature and not too cloudy. We did check in at the Visitor Center when we arrived to find out about a parking or day pass, but there was no fee for paddleboarding. There are quite a few shade structures with picnic tables and grills, but they are not near the water. They are up on a rocky ledge overlooking the lake. You are able to drop off your canoe or paddle board in the unloading zone, but parking is further up on the rocky ledge. Saw ducks and lots of fish. Went in the morning on a Friday and the lake was pretty empty. Just a few other people there- a couple fishing in their fishing boats, a couple speed boats pulling water skiers, and some other SUPs. The wind kicked up pretty bad in the afternoon, so suggest you go early if you can. I can’t say enough about how beautiful the backdrop was. Enjoy! See more..

  12. 4.5 Bosshard Galllery & Historic Mercantile (3 reviews)
    - A diverse and interesting warehouse sized gallery of Asian and American art and artifacts
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 AM Art Galleries • Antique Shops
One of the most interesting galleries and, personally staffed by John Bosshard, an even more interesting curator of art and artifacts from Asia and the American West. The gallery also is selectively stocked with local art. Anyone who loves art enough to make the trek to Georgia Okeefe's home will love to tour this vast warehouse of treasures. We purchased an Indonesian Jaraik which is a spirit carving made by a Mentawai tribe artist sometime before WWII. John shared his deep knowledge of the back story supplemented by scholarly documentation. Also and noteworthy, the wooden piece was damaged in shipping. I had a months long dialogue regarding the insurance claim and restoration. In the end John sent me a check to cover my costs and was a pleasure to deal with throughout. PS my Jaraik is fully restored and sits proudly on our mantel and makes for quite the conversations. Overall a great travel experience. See more..

    - Pottery Everywhere!
    Ancient Ruins
    Poshuouinge Ruins image
While there are no longer structures or even traces of structures on this site you can find ancient pottery everywhere along with areas that just sort of feel like they may have been areas where people cooked, or carved, or even guarded the property. If you look closely you can find broken arrowheads and some areas that seem like there was more action than others. It's great for the imagination and for the preservation of culture. Just don't take anything with you!!!! See more..
