Things to do & places to visit in Trinidad, Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad cover image
Looking for a Caribbean cultural melting pot renowned for its Carnival and pulsating to the beat of steel drums, soca music, and calypso? Trinidad is also lined with relaxing beaches and rainforest waterfalls. Nature watching is colorfully kaleidoscopic, with over 450 bird, 600 butterfly, and 700 orchid species. Golf, hiking, mountain biking, surfing, kayaking, fishing, and boating are among the outdoor pastimes. Cool off with fresh cane juice and sea moss milkshakes. Vegetarian food is plentiful. Eat curries and explore India’s influence at Maha Sabha Indian Caribbean Museum and the Waterloo Temple over the sea. Visit Port of Spain, and stroll and jog in Queen’s Park Savannah, near the Botanical Gardens, Emperor Valley Zoo, and Magnificent Seven buildings. The Savannah attracts truckloads of fresh coconuts, and doubles men sell coveted aloo pies. Walk around Independence Square and the Brian Lara Promenade. The Central Bank Money Museum in downtown’s financial district displays doubloons, gold bars, and Slave Savings Bank memorabilia. View Columbus Square’s 1836 Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Parliament meets in Woodford Square’s Red House. King’s Wharf is where cruise ships and Tobago ferries dock. The Venezuela ferry docks at Williams Bay. Near the Chaguaramas Military History and Aerospace Museum is a marina with yachts, sailboats, dry docks, and boat hires. The South Quay’s Fort San Andreas, built by Spain in the 1700s, has a small Port of Spain history museum branch of the National Museum and Art Gallery of Trinidad and Tobago.

    Ortinola Estates image
I joined another couple for the tour around the cocoa estate, led by the estate owner, Nikita. In a very interactive and personable way she explained to us the whole process of chocolate making right from picking pods (which we did on the grounds!) through drying the beans (we did the ‘cocoa dance’!) to the roasting , stirring and pouring into moulds. We got to create our own chocolate, which was delicious! Nikita deserves to do really well with this. I would recommend it to anyone want to learn more about chocolate, Trinidad history and wouldn’t say ‘no’ to being rewarded with a delicious bar (or two) of delicious local chocolate (after correctly answering Nikita’s questions, of course!) Caroni Swamp image
We had a lovely and safe experience on the boats. There was a lot to see in the swamp area, which is unexpectedly large and eventually washes into the sea, if followed all the way down. We recommend going 1-2 hours before sunset, as the birds come to roost in the mangrove trees, which provides a good opportunity to see them. We had the opportunity to see flocks of the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago, the Red Ibis. Lots of blue heron and white stork. Even a tree snake or two. We were taken for about 2 hours, including the time taken to go to and from each site. See more..

Theo is certainly a hummingbird whisperer and his love and passion shows in his presentation and all the detailed information shared. Even had a hummingbird sit in my hand and take nectar! See more..

Beautiful almost perfect beach Green lush surroundings, great waves, clean nice water When we visited July 2022 there was both umbrellas and chairs for rent, a small shop with trini snacks, many delicious homemade, and a small fast food restaurant with bake n’ shark, shrimps etc and beer & soft drinks. Beautiful sunset Really a great vibe, not many people. Only thing not making this a 5 star is the sandflies. But they are not bad. They just leave a small red mark. Use repellent every time you have been in the water and you’re fine. See more..

Dattatreya Temple and Hanuman Statue image
We really enjoyed our visit to this temple. An older gentleman and one of the caretakers of the temple took time to give us the history behind the place, he was so friendly. The grounds were virtually empty the day we went so it was nice to have the place to ourselves so to speak. Please be respectful and wear pants or long skirts, and don't take any pictures without asking first. See more..

  15. 4.5 Avocat Waterfall (41 reviews)
    - Pretty waterfall with great pool
    Waterfalls
    Avocat Waterfall image
I drove there on my own, parked in the yard for TT30 and hiked the path to the river, just follow the road until you reach the river then turn left and follow the path/river and look for a steep path on the right hand side just where the river splits. The water coming in from the right comes from the waterfall so you can swim up if you don't fancy the path. At various points you will need to walk in the river (or maybe there's a better way that I did not find since I went on my own without a guide). I went in flip flops but it is slippery in several spots. your feet will get wet. Nice vertical drop into the pool below. Well worth a visit. See more..

    Fort George image
Even though the winding tiny narrow road up and down the mountain is one of the most dangerous roads in Trinidad, once up there, it is totally worth it! It only took 10 minutes from the bottom to the top, and the grounds are well kept and preserved. The cannons are still there over looking the city. The house is beautiful, and the tiny prison that was only used to keep important documents and not prisoners was pretty cool! See more..
  18. 4.5 Gasparee Caves (34 reviews)
    - Paria Hike and Falls
    Caverns & Caves
    Gasparee Caves image
Wow wow wow.... First off this is a hike that requires you to be in shape. They say it takes 5 to 6 hours to and from but we started at 926am and didn't finish till 610pm. Bring water, start early like 7am and bring prepared food. Once you get to the beach there is fresh spring water you can refill your water bottles with. Travel as light as possible as this is a very strenuous hike. Its rated a 6/10 in difficulty and definitely do this hike with Shaun from Hike Life Adventures. He is the absolute best. Truly a gifted hiker. The beauty of this hike is the journey and finishing it. There is a boat that can take you to the beach but you miss the hidden gems along the way. I saw things many tourist never get to see. This was one for the books... See more..
