Caroni Swamp, Trinidad, Trinidad and Tobago

Knowledgeable guide and calming activity
We had a lovely and safe experience on the boats. There was a lot to see in the swamp area, which is unexpectedly large and eventually washes into the sea, if followed all the way down. We recommend going 1-2 hours before sunset, as the birds come to roost in the mangrove trees, which provides a good opportunity to see them. We had the opportunity to see flocks of the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago, the Red Ibis. Lots of blue heron and white stork. Even a tree snake or two. We were taken for about 2 hours, including the time taken to go to and from each site.

This is a must see for our overseas visitors
The serenity of this bejeweled wetland area provides a welcome respite from our overcrowded highways and dusty towns. Nanan tours in particular, provide an interesting and informative insight into our beautiful fauna and flora. The guides painstakingly point out the hidden creatures, be they reptilian, avian, or piscean. Even the pesky insects are given their due. The scarlet ibis, however, are the highlight of the tour. When these magnificent creatures begin to fly in there are oohs and aahs from excited sightseers sitting in the boats. Cameras and cell phones are busy recording the passage of these birds. When they do nest on their island of choice, however, they transform what was a green island of mangrove bushes into a blaze of colour, the scarlet of the densely packed ibises interspersed with white and some tricolour herons. That this extraordinary sight is only available at dusk, deprives cruise ship visitors of an amazing opportunity to observe one of the truly spectacular scenes in Trinidad. They, unfortunately, have to be back on board by 6pm.
