Spent ten days of Wreck Diving organized by GoDive Pacific with Tulagi Dive, starting off with shore dives on Bonegi 1 & 2, several Flyboats, the Sub I-1, the B17 and the fantastic USS Aaron Ward, USS Kanawha, USS John Penn, Azumasan Maru. Easy walk to a scenic waterfall. Get a 4WD to Parangiju Mountain Lodge and start the walk just next the the lodge. The guided walk takes about one hour to the chill waterfall with a nice pool (with shrimps and fish inside). A nice picnic area with the view, and nice to dip cool pool after the walk. See more..

In contrast to the bigness of both the American and Japanese memorials this one is quite small and discreet. It is much more human and very important in that it recognises the role of the local people in the Second World War and the fact that without them the outcome would have been very different. The Solomon Islanders put themselves in harms way in order to help the allies and many stayed behind Japanese line to get important information. They were also instrumental in the rescue of Kennedy when his PT boat was shipwrecked in the Western Province. I was lucky enough to stay in the new Villa accomodation recently opened. The rooms are fantastic! The Villa's are large and very spacious - with plenty of room to move. The bathrooms are large and well fitted out - the shower is especially great (see attached pictures). The spa on the deck is a great addition! I have stayed in a lot of places in Honiara and this is by far the best. I will definitely be staying here on all my future trips! I was also lucky enough to snorkel off the end of the jetty at the resort on one afternoon- I found out later that it's called Harry's Landing - I was surprised at how many species of fish were just off the end of the jetty - it was very refreshing and a lot of fun! If you are looking for slick presentation and helpful signage forget it. Firstly there is no sign from the coast road (potholed and bumpy) where to turn off. If you get to the B17 Homestay you have gone too far! Apparently the site used to be bigger, before the troubles, but 2/3 has grown over so what is left is a collection of WWII era aircraft (mostly US) and some Japanese field pieces. There are War memorials for US, AUS, NZ and Japanese dead. It is SBD $100 to get in. The lady who seems to run it is reasonably knowledgeable. Essentially this is a collection of wrecks that are slowly returning to the soil surrounded by exuberant tropical gardens - great ginger. Think of it as a metaphor and a funeral garden for some of the equipment that the 2 sides killed each other with and you're probably closer to a description than "Museum". See more..

Tetere Beach is quite difficult to find, and you will probably have to get directions from the locals. For those interested in WWII, the site is covered with military artefacts, and the owner of the 'museum' is the grandson of Jacob Vouza, who has a wealth of knowledge about what occurred during the war. If you have the time (it's about a 1.5 hour drive from Honiara), I would highly recommend making Tetere beach part of your trip. See more..

If you want to sell this place to tourists as a botanical garden, then there is a lot to be done. First make it safer to visit. There are instances of tourists being robbed. Get rid of the drunken youth who hang around. Place needs to be fenced and security provided. Would be good to have botanical names of the trees provided. And some walkways and benches provided for visitors to use. And once there is regularity of visitors options for food and drinks may also be considered. Right now, it needs a lot of sprucing up.....
