I loved this place! We decided to go from Guadalajara, it was like 45 minutes drive. There's a parking lot where you pay $30 pesos per person. Children younger than 12 don't pay. Restrooms are clean and to get to the guachimontones you have to walk like 400 meters uphill. We went in October and the weather was beautiful, just perfect. All green, lots of dragonflies and butterflies around, which I loved. Coming back from the guachimontones we went into the little museum. It's small but cute and informative. There's a mini souvenir store also. We only had the morning for this quick trip, we were kind of in a hurry and spent a little less than two hours, but you definitely can stay more and enjoy the scenery or take the guided tour. We also didn't have time to go around the town. See more..

Gabriel Ramirez is the owner of this humble-looking workshop/gallery, filled with many beautiful pieces. It is located along the way to an archaeological site called "Guachimontones", a very interesting and beautiful site with rounded pyramids .The shop sells obsidian, amethysts, and other gemstones, loose, on jewelry and in art, and Gabriel offers tours to obsidian mines on horseback (or burro? ), but we didn't have time to go. Gabriel speaks English, since he lived and worked in the United States for many years, and decided to retire in his hometown. He has many interesting facts and stories about the area. We were told by our tour guide that the government took a huge chunk of land land away from the residents who lived near the pyramids because it was an archaeological site. The people living near the ruins were given close to nothing for their lands and told to leave, in addition, the local artisans were not allowed to sell their goods at the site. We were very happy to find La Rana Artesana and have a chance to meet Gabriel, truly a skilled artist. Hopefully we can go back soon with more room in our luggage! See more..

See more..
