  1. 4.5 Unfinished Temple de la Preciosa Sangre (72 reviews)
    - Probably the Most Beautiful Church in Mexico
    Historic Sites

If you want to come here specifically to visit the church's ruins, do so. If you want to ruin the beauty of natural ruinous beauty (like HumbertoM), then stay far, far away; and never venture into the mountains of Jalisco. If you come with a rotten materialist heart, you will be cursed for all eternity. Don't bring your romantic partners here, don't bring your horrible Hollywood sets here. Come as a person who appreciates Beauty and all that Beauty has to offer the human spirit and imagination. Thank you. See more..

Mascota was recently designated a Pueblo Magico which is a designation for special and significant tourist towns in Mexico. Mascota is a small, well kept town, with beautiful cobbled streets. The town plaza has a lovely gazebo and garden area perfect for resting and people watching. The lovely church and municipal building are also on the square. There is a coffee shop on 1 corner and an ATM on the other. The region is known for its coffee, cheeses, preserves and Raicilla (basically tequila but not from the designated region). The road from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara goes through Mascota and is a beautiful scenic drive. There are also some nice scenic drives nearby Mascota. See more..

On a day trip from bucerias, we decided to drop by his house to see if he still welcomes visitors. Francisco is not a young man, but so happy to give us a private tour of his house. I had read that he charged 10 pesos a person in 2018, but I did not ask him the price and gave him 50 pesos in recognition of his 20 years of work, and his great imagination. I loved it, so different from the usual museums and you get to meet this lovely local man. See more..

Friday 13th April and we visited Mascota as part of Vallarta Adventures Pueblos Magicos tour and one of the highlights was a visit to this Church in the centre of the Town, opposite the Square or Plaza. In the grounds of the Church is a statue to commemorate Saint José María Robles Hurtado, who was from Mascota. He was a Mexican priest martyred during the Cristero War which took placed between 1926 and 1929. Inside the Church is a picture on one of the walls of the Saint. The Basilica has a high arched ornate ceiling. There are a number of statues of Saints along the sides of the pews, which leads down to a large very striking altar, with a number of religious statues of Mary the Mother of God and Jesus Christ. While we were in the Square there was a peel of the Church bells, which range out across the town. The bells are housed in the impressive clock/bell tower that is a feature of the Mascota skyline. Visitors are requested to remove hats/caps when entering - photography is permitted. Entry to the Basilica is free, however there is a donation box near the door, all helps towards the upkeep and maintenance of this magnificent building. Beautiful Church well worth a visit, take a few moments in one of the pews to enjoy the splendour and tranquillity of this holy place. See more..
