   My wife and I and an ex-pat Albanian/Kosovan recently had the pleasure to be guided around the ancient and inspirational city of Gjakovë. Having travelled from Australia we were very keen to experience typical Albanian/Kosovan hospitality and see historical sites. Our Svonon tour guides were extremely welcoming and had an amazing knowledge of the cities ancient and modern past. Many significant religious, cultural and historical sites were shown and explained to us. Fascinating! It was also a delight to fare in a traditional lunch that was delicious and fresh.    Spent < 1 hour Architectural Buildings
   Beautiful mosque built in 1595. The mosque complex suffered heavy damage due to a fire in 1999 during the Kosovo war but now restaurations are complete and you can see a really beautiful mosque with nice garden in the center of Gjakova. We visited this place on a guided tour from Tirana and we were welcomed by the kind man working there who gave us some explanations in Albania about the mosque and its interior. It is very beautiful and he was friendly. If you are in Gjakova, this is the place to be. See more..

    TRADITIONAL HOUSE OF QERKEZI FAMILY - HISTORICAL MUSEUM 1999 SHTEPIA TRADICIONALE E FAMILJES QERKEZI MUZEU HISTORIK 1999 House of Family Qerkezi has been turned into museum in remember of Halimi (husband of Ferdonije), and their four sons: Artani, Ardiani, Armendi and Edmondi, which was abducted by Serbian police forces, in 1999. In night of 27th march of 1999, Serbian forces has entered to their home and captured Halimi and four sons. The remains of 2 of her sons have since been found and buried, but her husband and the other 2 sons are still missing. For women like Ferdonije, time does not move on. She has turned much of her home in Gjakova, Kosovo. She turned the house into a museum dedicated to their memory. Upstairs, their rooms are as they left them. Toys, soccer balls and pieces of clothing are carefully wrapped in plastic. In another room, display cases hold the bullet-ridden clothes of the 2 sons whose bodies she recovered, a terrible reminder of how their lives ended. House of Qerkezi family is one of rare prove of suffering during war, and crimes that has been made from Serbia forces in Kosovo in that time. Mother Ferdonije Qerkezi, has found the force to live and show the world the fate of her family and suffer that has passed. The muesum is one of the place that must be visited during stay in Kosovo, in order to understand fact from last 1999 war in Kosovo. .     Gjeravica is the second-highest mountain peak in the Korab Mountains mountain range and the Dinaric Alps chain, after Maja Jezercë. It is the highest mountain in Kosovo. It has an elevation of 2,656 m (8,714 ft) above sea level. Gjeravica is in the western part of Kosovo, in the municipality of Junik. Gjeravica is somewhat different from the rest of the Accursed mountains in its lack of the stony, limestone texture the other mountains in Accursed Mountains have.[citation needed] Many large and small glacial lakes can be found near the summit. The largest of the lakes is Gjeravica Lake, which is just under the summit and is the origin of the Erenik river. Gjeravica are mostly known for the growth of chestnuts.There are also wild strawberries growing in Gjeravica during the summer. It is very nice plase for climbin and hiking mountains. The lower part of mountain is fully with pine tree. On area there are called "Stane", an wooden house where you can stay. If you want better condition, GRAND Gjeravica Hotel, is proper place. It is good to visit all the year time, during the winter, the level of snow is high, but there is possible to arrange the trip, through local inhabitants.
