The Danish-born founder of the castle, knight Erik Axelsson Tott, decided that a powerful fortification should be build to protect the strategically important Savo region. The castle was supposed to repel Russian attacks from the east and to guarantee the control of the Savo region for the Swedish Crown. The history of Olavinlinna is a mixture of medieval arms clashing, cannons roaring and every-day chores inside the security of the castle's thick walls. The changes in the ownership of the castle left their mark on Olavinlinna: this can be seen in the varied architecture of the castle.    Fantastic opera festival in a beautiful setting. The operas are of very high quality and the service is out of this world. I am wheel-chair bound and the personnel meets you outside the medieval castle and pushes, drags and almost carries you into the stands. After the opera the same again in reverse. Both ships will take one for a 1½ hour cruise, giving an idea of yesteryear transport when these ships worked scheduled long-distance services. The staff are extremely friendly, English is spoken, and coffee and cakes in the saloon make the trip really worthwhile.    There were a small violin concert last time we visited this church. Old wooden building sounds well. So well that the cover of accompanied piano must keep closed.     This Kerma canal cruise was very nostalgic to me, since when I was a child, my dad used to sail this route with our boat during our summer holidays. The weather was a bit chilly this day, but luckily we got a nice seating place inside near the window. We did not take the dinner during this trip, but the dishes looked very good. Tour info was intresting and the changing versitile scenery of this route made the time fly by. Also the bus trip rom Savonlinna to Kerma canal was really intresting with sights to see.     We spent two nights here and everything went well. The resort has high quality facilities and it has modern cabins and catering is excellent. You can eat at the resort for a very reasonable price and the food quality is good. Only negative thing for some people might be, that there are a lot of families with kids running around everywhere.     If you visit Olavinlinna castle and Riihisaari museum the also visit the steam schooner S/S Salama. It used to be a cargo and a passenger ship. It sank in the 1898 when another passenger ship hit it. It was raised in the 1971 and restoration work stared on 1972. There is also another ship, S/S Mikko, next to the S/S Salama.     We went on a cayaking trip in the Kolovesi National Park arranged by Activity Maker. The guide picked us up at a pre-arranged address and drove us to the starting point. The cayaking was fantastic, the route was beautiful and the surroundings pristine. The trip included a stop at a pre-historic cave painting and a fire-cooked lunch with sausages, traditional Finnish pasties and barbequed banana and chocolate with coffee.     We took the one hour cruise on the lake. The boat departed on time. There was announcements at interesting locations in multiple languages. There is a bar servicing beers and drinks on the boat.
