I dedicated one day to the Tigray Churches but I recommend a longer tour in order to see more of them: there are over 30 churches! I decided to climb all the way to Abuna Yemata and made it with the help of my guide and the local guide. The view from the top is stunning and the church so unbelievably beautiful that I shed tears. The priest is available to provide information about the history of the church and its Saint. I wouldn’t go to Ethiopia without contacting Kiros and taking Lucy Tours. One of the most memorable experiences ever. The best part was trekking in the mountains in the North, the guide he organised for us was exceptional, kind and really made us feel welcome. With two children aged 9 and 10 and not much time it was very good to have a car and experienced and very punctual and professional driver. I would highly recommend Lucy Tours if you want to visit Ethiopia - they can Taylor a tour to your interests, time frame and budget. If I was to plan the trip again I would probably make sure to spend at least 3 days in each place to not have the feeling of rushing and ticking off sites seen. I booked a tour to Axum/Tigray Churches/Danakil with Teddy Zion Tours. Overall, very satisfied with their services. Teddy himself make sure to meet the travellers at the beginning and the end of the trip, and every day he is in contact with his team to make sure that everything is progressing smoothly. Teddy is clearly passionate about what he is doing and it feels so during the whole time. He is also very flexible, allowing changes in plans to accommodate various requests. We do a tour to danakil depression after corona pandemic and the conflict on the north of the country. We have been very scared of the situation of the country as we already noticed there were a dispute and wasn't comfortable to do it. But we were very keen to know about danakil depression and was interested to visit. At last we ended to decide to do the tour and contacted ethio danakil tour. We booked a combined tour with lalibela and simien mountains. The route was via semera and it was very fantastic. Danakil is amazing and Lalibela was underrated as we didn't like churches and monasteries. But this was extraordinary. Am almost through the week having returned from a fantastic trip to Tigray Ethiopia last Sunday and still feeling the happy vibes. We spent a fantastic week with Sammy, Muli and 'the boys' from Ethio Cycling showing us this wonderful part of the world. Three days on the bikes with the support from the local athletes helping us up the climbs, rock climbing to churches , trekking across streams to drink honey wine and eating good food. And the coffee, on par with the very best Australian barista. All I would have done differently is stayed for another week and rode some more. Well done and we will be back. See more..

Mesele guided us (my 84 yr old, but very fit father and myself) and drove us around the sights of Axum and environment, with his bajaj for 2 consecutive days. He was highly recommended by a friend who enjoyed his services prior to our visit. Our tours included among other the Pantalawon monastry, Dongar palace, Judith stelae field and the impressive Gobo dura lion carving. The 3 days tour in Danakil/salar/Dallol/Erta Ale was espectacular. If you finish in the volcano you will sleep under the stars 2 nights. You will even see the Afar people working with the salt and the cammels carrying them. And if you are very lucky your driver will explain you amany things. I took a tour of Tigray church’s with Excellent Ethiopia Tours. Shortly after arriving in the city of Aksum, Axum came to Ethiopia in the first place, so I didn't have enough money and local information, so I was worried at first. However, when I listened to the story well, it seemed to be convinced both in terms of content and price. In addition, the staff carefully invited me eagerly and decided to participate. Then, it was more fulfilling than I thought, and it was really nice to participate. It is quite difficult to go to Tigray on an individual basis, so I think you will join the tour. The company provides a private transfer from Lalibela to Mekele, and then full 3-day Danakil Depression tour that covers: Erta Ale Volcano, Dallol, Lake Asale + Salt Mines, village of Hamid Ela. Overall experience was amazing, and Gere is an amazing tour guide/group leader. We had thought that the volcano would be the highlight but when we arrived, the lava level has already dropped to the point that we could only see smokes and a few red dots. I arrived in Axum by myself. I met Mulugeta- my tour guide where my adventure started. It was an experience after experience. Did you know that the Queen of Sheba used to reside in that area? As well as one of the wise man that visited baby Jesus? I wouldn’t have been able to see all that without Mulugeta. He helped me not only with tourism, but also when I was sick and needed medications. He brought me to a religious procession at 5am in the morning free of charge in order to appreciate more their culture and it was the procession of the Ark, where approximately 2000 people dressed in white robes with candles in their hands. They surrounded a replica of the Ark of the Covenant singing and praising the Lord. It was a deep act of dedication. If you are not in shape or are scared of heights, don't waste your time and go somewhere else as you can't see anything from the bottom of the rock where the monastery is. If you climb up, the view is magnificent as the monastery itself. Great history and architecture that can add up to your rock-hewn churches tour. I was lucky enough to make this wonderful and unforgettable trip with magma flow and the professional team around Israel. They are absolutely professional and they know what is important on this trip: security and respect and knowledge about the region and the people they are with. of course the tourists but also the Arfar. I recommend everyone to do the 2 or 5 days. all in all an unforgettable trip that I would always repeat. They made everything possible: swimming, delicious food, cold beer, wine for the sunset and being first at all places before other groups arrived. 5km off the main road, down a bumpy road to collect a priest wielding a key and up to the start of the climb. The climb takes around 10 mins, depending on fitness levels- beware though...there are lots of young boys loitering who try to help you then demand money for doing so....even if they don't help! The rock church is impressive.... seeing it when you step through the gate is amazing (well, i thought so as it was different to other sites I'd been in Ethiopia). The priest does an elaborate unlocking ceremony - which is great to see from the inside...take a torch for best effect! Inside the cave church is impressive. the craving is still looking good- not overly intricate but still wow! There are vervet monkeys running around the grounds and the views are awesome. Only thing that spoilt it was the boys demanding money and the kids saying 'hello pen'...argh! Look what irresponsible tourists have done to everyone who follows! There are only 2 rooms, one with an electric generator and one with archaeological finds from the ancient moon temple found at Meqaber Gaewa. The temple artefacts include a libation altar, statue of a seated woman, incense burners, glass vials, some jewelry/beads, and pottery. There is good English signage and some plaques explaining the temple site. It's a quick visit, but if you're interested in the history of the region, it's worth the stop. See more..
