As everyone says it will take a bit if effort to get here, but things that are worth it often do. The road from Dili covers all the scales - some parts good to some parts diabolical. The last 18kms are the worst for sure. You can stop at the Dare memorial and Maubisse on the way in. Make sure you take with you any snacks you may want - there is one shop in the village that sells water and biscuits but not much else. We set off at 3.30am and were up the top before sunrise - which was beautiful. There were some clouds but they actually added to the overall effect . It is pretty cold at the top - we had layers which we needed, take a hat and gloves if you have them plus your torch. The guesthouse is basic - again you will need a torch as the electricity doesn't come on until 6pm and was not on when we got up at 3am. Dinner and breakfast are basic. You will need to bring something to eat of you are doing the sunrise climb as you won't get anything before you head out. The climb itself is sometimes difficult in the dark. It is not an easy stroll, but doable. If you need to stop and take a breath you can and still get up to the top before sunrise. There is something going on with the guides and their prices - both us and the other group that were climbing were told the price had gone upto $25. Not sure if this is correct or when this all changed. Very worthwhile to do, ere are a couple of markets on the way home as well. A great 2 day trip. See more..
