   We chose to visit the Hippos while staying in Bobo-Dioulasso because our hippo spotting in Pendjari National Park in Benin wasn't fantastic. The Mare aux Hippopotames is a 60 km drive northeast of Bobo. It's good to note that 40 km of the drive is on the highway headed toward Dedougou and the remaining 20 km is down a very very very bad West-African dirt road. The drive took us 1.5 hours from Bobo. We were lucky enough to have 10 hippos hanging out very close to the boat launch. The guides poled us out to the hippos in a decent-sized aluminum boat. We stayed and watched the hippos for about 30 minutes and then bumped our way back to Bobo. The tourist cost for the attraction is 3000 CFA. It was a nice trip although it took 4 hours to get 30 minutes of hippo watching in. See more..
