Big Shoals Trail, Florida, United States
4.0 (5 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #7 in White Springs Hiking Trails
The Woodpecker bike trail can be accessed from Big Shoals.
The Woodpecker trail is a 6.8 mile (round trip) paved bike trail through the woods. It is not used much, and frequently you can bike the entire trail and only see one other couple. It's wonderful for taking children, as it is a very easy flat ride, through native Florida. There is a porta- potty at the "Little Shoals" end and a rest room at the Big Shoals end. The cost is only $4 per car with up to 8 people in the car. At a leisurely pace it will take 45-60 min. round trip. There are a couple of benches along the way to stop and rest if desired.

Great Hiking and Biking Trails!
Little Shoals Recreation Area is a great place for hiking or biking. There are a variety of trails and great options to mix it up. The Florida trail also runs through this area, along part of the Suwannee River. It's quiet, a nice representation of North Florida scenery and a mix of sun and shade. You can see deer, wild turkey, armadillo, turtles, a variety of birds, including great blue heron or a bald eagle. My husband and I have visited 2 or 3 times a week for the last 18 months. It's always a pleasure.

Long branch trail
We walked the trail this weekend. It is well marked by blue paint on trees and occasional arrows to keep you on the trail. But it seems rather neglected, and is very narrow in parts. We found a tick after walking the trail, so check. An easy to moderate walk through a north Florida woods. It also was flooded in one spot which made for a small adventure trying to get across to finish the trail.
