Lion's Head, Western Cape, South Africa

4.5 (4.331 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #5 in Western Cape Mountains

Amazing sunset

Lion's Head in Cape Town is a peak situated at 669 meters above sea level. The hike up Lions Head takes approximately 90 minutes at a moderate pace. Lions Head trail is steep but do-able, while the 5.5km trail packs a punch (Both ways). The views from Lions head are amazing. Take a look around you and see the beauty. Lions Head hike is the preferred route for mountain enthusiasts, the easiest of the routes in Cape Town.

    Amazing sunset
We went up an hr and a bit before sunset to catch it at the top. If you’re fit and hike then it’s an easy 40min - hr walk up Lion’s head. The only ‘exciting’ bit is the fixed chains and rungs in the last section at the top (which you can avoid on an alternative path). Sunset was amazing and totally worth it. We left the top just after the sun went down to avoid the bottle neck of people on the chains etc and caught the sunset colours over Camp’s Bay further down which I’d recommend seeing.

Great sunset view, but overcrowded as it gets
No travel guide will make you leave Cape Town without having visited the Lion's head, particularly during sunset hours. As the view indeed is spectacular is this a valid suggestion, but keep in mind that it is far from an insiders tipp. The hill gets overcrowded with legions of cars parked around the edges of the road, almost reaching half the mountain down. Therefore make sure to plan enough time, despite the heads proximity to the city, to ensure a hassle free experience. Also keep in mind that hiking back in the dark if arriving without car, is not necessarily the safest idea, so have a plan and do some realisitic expectation management, otherwise it really is a majestic sight.
