In the middle of the 7th century, Songtsan Gampo and his team built Drak-Yerpa for his wife. Songstan Gampo (604-650) was the 33rd king of the Yarlung Dynasty. And he was the first emperor of a united Tibet. It was said that there were 108 caves at Drak Yerpa in the past but now only a dozen of them remain well. And the earliest among these caves is the cave of Songtsan Gampo. Many individual temples were built around the cave, then after several expansions, they were consolidated forming the well-known temple. This site is very peaceful and has stunning views. To walk and hike where Songtsan Gampo and the later Guru Renpoche and the later Padmasambhava or Guru Rinpoche (late 8th to early 9th century) have walked is really aspiring.See more..

4.5Canggu Temple(13 reviews) - Stops you in your tracks Religious Sites
We got there as the 30 or so nuns were chanting. It was mesmerizing. I felt a bit embarrassed encroaching on their life, taking photos and just listening. It was a chance to see up close the auctioning of Tibetan Buddhism. They also have a very nice shop with reasonable prices. Leave a donation or buy something just because you have the money to do so.See more..
The caves are located near Samye (not near Lhasa as classified by TripAdvisor). You can visit only Chimpu nunnery which will be relatively fast, but I recommend going all the way up to the temples almost at the top of the mountain. There is no road there and you will have to walk there. Nowadays there are stairs almost all the way up and it is not very difficult (but takes time). It is best to go there early in the morning before it becomes too hot. The view from the temple on the top is amazing. Also, on the way you will see some small caves where monks and nuns meditate, and you can visit some of them.See more..

I keep thinking I’ve seen the most beautiful Tibetan monastery and then I see another, perhaps more beautiful. Under construction, which they all seem to be, but great to walk around. Only other visitors were Tibetan pilgrims. You can’t go to the nearby sky burial site (no longer ever permitted for tourists), but the birds are in evidence. Lunch in the all vegetarian refectory was pretty good. See more..

4.0Dorje Drak Monastery(2 reviews) - Beautiful small monastery high above the Yarlung Tsampo Friday: 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites
Dorje Druk is a beautiful monastery on a hill overlooking the Yarlung Tsampo river. Next to it are the ruins of Gonggar Dzong. From the old Shigatse-Lhasa road which is located on the south side of the Yarlung Tsampo river and approx. 8 kms from the junction to Lhasa and Gonggar airport is this jewel of a monastery. The location offers a breathtaking view of the river flowing peacefully in the valley and on the opposite site of the hill one can enjoy the views of fields and villages in the distance. Inside the monastery is a small chapel with the mummified body of a little girl from the 11th century. Since several years I always intended to visit the place but due to time restrictions it never materialized. This year was different. I had the luck to meet the abbot of the place who permitted me also to make some photos inside the small chapel. My thanks go to him as well as my tour guide who arranged a visit on a very short notice (just by phone shortly before we passed the monastery on the way back to Lhasa). For those who have some time I recommend to visit the monastery. It's worth the effort.See more..

5.0Juenang Temple(1 review) - The hairs stood upon the back of my neck Friday: 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM Religious Sites
This is a must and a focus of pilgrimage for anyone going to Tibet. Whilst I enjoyed visiting other temples they did in some cases seem dark and foreign to me (as is to be expected) but not the Juenang. The moment I entered here it felt like home. The monks playing instruments, were wonderful and when heard and seen in reality and not in a recording all blended together and didn't have that sense of discord which can by herd in a recording. Literally the hairs stood up on the back of my neck, it was an intense experience. I sat there for other an hour, this is the most spiritual place I visited. The hundreds of butter candles and the friendly smiles are not to be missed.See more..

See more..
