Educational and fun

There are lots of beautiful palaces to see in India. This was one of the largest we saw and the setting on the lake is quite nice. It is actually still a working palace for the Maharana whom we spotted at a table in a courtyard working with his advisors. We had a personal tour guide who was very knowledgeable about the building and the history.

Womb of Udaipur: City Palace, Pichola Lake and Jag Mandir
The City Palace cobstruction was initiated by Udai Singh and successive rulers went about expanding it. The sprawling palace is situated in the centre of Udaipur City. The entry ticket costs 300/- per person. Tickets for the Boat trip on Pichola lake to Jagmandir can also be obtained here for 800/- per head. The palace will need at least two hours to be explored. Numerous rooms, mini temples and courtyards exist. The rooms begin to resemble one another beyond a certain point. However, the view from the top floors of the palace is worth a watch. A point to be noted here is that only about half of the palace is open to the public while the other half is the private space of the royal family. Though I did not try the restaurant located within the palace premises, the general view obtained from the environment is that it is over priced with a not so courteous staff. There are other restaurants on the way to the Boating point which have a good review. There are numerous shops within the Palace dealing with local art and artefacts. The Boat ride to Jagmandir and back takes about 2.5 hours including the halt at Jagmandir. It is a must do thing as it offers a spectacular view of the Palace and the City itself. The construction of Jagmandir was intiated by Raja Ajai Singh and finally compketed by Raja Jagat Singh. It is a fusion of Mughal and Rajputana architecture. A place to be enjoyed for its unique location and some really exquisite paintings. PS: The City Palace and Jagmandir were the shooting sites for the iconic James Bond movue 'Octopussy'. The Place that cannot be missed.

    A must-see in Udaipur!
Probably the main tourist landmark in Udaipur. Highly recommend to hire a guide for the visit and go for a boat ride to Jag Mandir island to appreciate the view of the palace from Pichola Lake. Definitely more impressive than the Jaipur City Palace, yet not as grand as the Amber Fort or Chittorgarh Fort.
