We loved the delightful town of Opatija which is situated on the coast of Croatia on the Adriatic Sea. In the 19th century it was a fashionable resort town, and is dotted with Habsburg-era villas. The very attractive Lungomare promenade runs along the coastline, and gives lovely views of the town and neighbouring islands. Small stalls were lined up along the promenade selling souvenirs, ice creams, tours and the like. We saw the beautiful 1800s Villa Angiolina, which is set in a garden of exotic plants, and today houses the Croatian Museum of Tourism. And we made a short stop at the 14th century St. Jacob’s Church which is located near Villa Angiolina. There’s lots to see in this pretty town so if you’re on the Istrian Peninsula, make sure you visit Opatija.
