    - Gorgeous Château in the middle of Pau!
    Monday: 9:30 AM - 11:45 AM, 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Castles
    Château de Pau image
At the origin of the city, the Castle of Pau offers its visitors a journey of over a thousand years through local and national history. Many well-known historical figures are associated with this place. In the fourteenth century, as part of his "great Pyrenean plan" Gaston Febus made the Castle of Pau into an outstanding medieval fortress by building the iconic brick keep. During the Renaissance, Henry IV, "the only king remembered well by his people", was born at the Castle on 13th December 1553, where he was rocked in the famous turtle shell cradle. He lived a Bearnaise childhood, far from the pomp of the court, to then become one of the most popular kings in the history of France. The current appearance of the Castle is largely due to the great restoration work undertaken in the nineteenth century by Louis-Philippe, anxious to legitimise his political standing by linking it with that of the first of the Bourbons, Henry IV. A visit here is well worth it if you are in the area! We were staying just up the road so couldn't leave without a trip there! I honestly wasn't sure how it would go with teenagers but they honestly really enjoyed it! The highlight for us was the Labyrinth! It was great fun trying to work out all the clues & complete it. The medieval games in the Chateau grounds were also good fun! It was nice to spend some time doing something a little different! We also had a wander around the chateau. We spent around 3.5/4 hours here & if we hadn't of been so tired from the labyrinth we would have spent longer! See more..

    - Chateau Bonaguil
Monday: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Castles
    Château de Bonaguil image
The powerful Berenger de Roquefeuil (1448-1530), descended from the aristocracy of Quercy and Rouergue, devoted several years of his life to making of Bonaguil the fortress of legend that it is today. It equips the castle with an enormous barbican, with six towers, one of which is among the most beautiful in the country, with seven drawbridges, a baffle, a casemate, gunboats and a pierced sparrow tower Of loopholes for a more incisive defense of the ditches. In spite of a paradoxical situation between Quercy and Perigord, far from the main thoroughfares, magnificent architecture, gigantic proportions (the quarter in plan of the city of Carcassonne) and a state of conservation so remarkable led VIOLLET-LE-DUC, Lawrence d'ARABIE or André BRETON to quote Bonaguil as an example! The commune of Fumel bought Bonaguil in 1860 and classified it under the title of Historic Monuments in 1862. See more..

If you have kids that have the slightest bit of intrigue and enjoy treasure hunts then they surely love it here. it was a very enjoyable way to spend a morning. Château de Villemonteix image
We are an English couple with a nearby holiday property, and this was our second visit to the Chateau. We learnt much more on our second visit, particularly with regards to other historic buildings close by - especially the links to Pierre D’Aubusson. These links were fully explained by the narrative of the excellent presentation given by the Owner. We were fascinated by the exclusive collection of 16 -17-18 century tapestries on display and other unique items. Overall it was a fantastic guided tour. Afterwards we were able to savour the very picturesque setting of the grounds surrounding the Chateau. The information Centre (“Acceuil”) has a vibrant display of post cards, posters and other interesting items for purchase if you wish. We are definitely going to return to see the completion of the retuned restored tapestry when it’s available. Thanks very much and we would recommend this visit to everybody. See more..

Incredible and unique experience visiting this castle turned Chateau. The owners’ ancestors have occupied and improved this amazing residence for over 1,000 years, one of only four in all of France. To tour this is to see and learn about how architecture changed to fit the necessities and style of each generation. One of the French kings stayed here the night before a victorious battle not far away. Each of the rooms were renovated soon after the French Revolution and have a theme based on a famous ancestor. My favorite is the Pasha room, with many pictures and artifacts that honor that Military genius, The Pasha. Very English friendly and unforgettable. You can also roam about the forty acres - magical. The tour begins with a visit to the Cooper museum which is interesting if a little abstract in relation to the chateau itself. Our guide explained everything in both French and English for the benefit of everyone on the tour which may have contributed to the tour taking slightly longer than it would normally. However, the tour was informative and good humoured throughout. The chateaux is not extensive, however at €3 each it's extremely good value for money. See more..

Follow Loic de Ternay, owner of the castle, for an exciting visit told with humor and fantasy. Let yourself be carried away by the romantic and colorful story of the knight Bertrand de Beauvau. Admire the exceptional architecture of its castle. An unforgettable discovery rich in anecdotes. At the end of the visit (suitable for all ages), you take part in a puzzle game to find the identity of a knight. This one, a little weird, appears at the castle, he has lost his memory and no longer knows who he is. Will you help him find his identity? You will have to solve puzzles and navigate mysterious underground passages. You will sometimes be a little scared but if you find the right answer the knight will reward you... (several levels of difficulty, game in French, knowing how to read). Game in the spirit of the escape game. This is an opportunity to discover a science and a somewhat forgotten art: heraldic art. This is a fabulous - and surprisingly high tech - museum. The chateau itself is beautiful and really intriguing. The lady who showed us around, Jackie, was very knowledgeable and the collection of bonnets provides a fascinating insight into French society. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
