Caldwell County Jail Museum, Texas, United States

Worth the stop

My husband and I took a short day trip to Lockhart and were happy the museum was open, because much of the shops weren’t. There’s a lot of history in this building and a very helpful staff.

Great Stop - Need to Support These Historical Places
In Area to eat some BBQ and wanted to visit. Was a bit concerned as last review in 2022 said you could not review the cells. I tried to call to confirm but no answer, so only a couple of blocks off the downtown area so just went. The lady overseeing said "honey you can tour everything". So for $4.00 Adults $2.00 for Kids we got started. Yes the downstairs is about artifacts in the area, trail riders, typically bedroom, Old tools used, Military, Edison Phonograph, but all from Lockhart area. 4 floors. The only area not viewable was basement that was used for confinment in the day she said the stairs were extremely steep and for safety they have closed it off. This is not a musuem for the handicapped if viewing the cells above. But I have to say it was one of the most interesting and was used up until 1985.

    Worth the visit!
On a recent trip to the Austin area we visited the Lockhart County Jail Museum. The docent was very knowledgable and had interesting stories to tell. The museum is very small but interesting...most of the artifacts were donated by local families. The price for entrance was just $2...well worth it for history lovers. The jail cells were kept in the original condition and were not cleaned up which gives you an eerie feeling of doom and lightless life. As I said it is very small so we only spent about 30-40 minutes there. Be sure to ask him about what to eat at the local barbecue restaurants!
