Stokstraaf once belonged to the poorest part of the city. But then, city planners decided to renovate the neighborhood. They turned it into a lovely part of Maastricht, with beautiful buildings and great shops. It is not cheap to buy here, but even without buying anything, it is worth going here.

Shopping in Maastricht
When somebody would ask when in Maastricht where should he/she go for shopping for sure for me it would be Stokstraat. A narrow street in the historical center of Maastricht that over the years has become the main shopping area in the city. Smaller or bigger shops, from pocket friendly (not too many places) to high end shops - it is all dependent on how much money you want to spend. Also from clothing and shoes to chocolate and special gift shops. You can also just walk through there and stop at one of the cafes that are on the street. Overall I do recommend you put this street on your list of landmarks to visit in Maastricht - even if you are not going for shopping. It is a very nice experience.

nice old street with expensive woman's clothes shops
nice restored medieval street in the center. expensive stores, so the street is not so busy. the offical 'best pub of the Netherlands', de Karkol is located here. at the south end is an very busy icecream- shop.
