Khao Mai Kaew Cave, Krabi Province, Thailand

4.5 (313 reviews) Spent Ranking #11 in Ko Lanta Caverns & Caves

Great adventure

We got quite a bit more than we expected. The whole trip requires some sure footedness. The walk to the cave is in the forest which is very pretty and they have made ladders in the difficult places. the cave is awesome but we were warned there are some difficult bits which turned out to be easily manageable as we are relatively fit and do walk at home alot. We were lucky in that our guide spoke very good English and was really informative about the area, the history the culture and the farming, as well as the caves itself. It certainly enhanced our experience. Most of the cave is spacious so I did not get claustrophobic as I have done in other caves previously.

Impressive cave for the adventures person
Expect a workout, you will sweat from the inclination during tracking through the woods and inside the cave (30min to cave,1h in cave and 30 min back). Wear appropriate clothes, sneakers or tight fitting shoes with good grip, no flip-flops. Entrance fee + guide 300thb/person. Inside the cave there are a few glimmering limestone formations, bats and spiders. But the cave in itself is impressive with its more horizontal formation. There are quite a few ladders inside, with 40-50cm between steps. However the ladders are sturdy, even for a 95kg person. In the end you will need to walk on all fours to get out. So this is an experience for the more adventures person but worth trying if you want to do something different. I have never experienced something similar before, even if I have been into a handful different limestone caves in my life. Our guide did not speak much (no safety instructions etc. but what should you expect in Thailand?), he was more of the “show the way and point out”-type. But my feeling was that he understood me quite well and even if he answered in a simple way he answered my questions, so I was satisfied.
