LBJ themed family trip

We made a LBJ historical visit that brought us to the parks in Stonewall and Johnson City and to the Library in Austin. It was a great trip. We were in town for Christmas lights and a tour of LBJ’s boyhood home. Not only were the parks and library fantastic, the Rangers went above and beyond. When my youngest left his stamp book in the visitor center in Stonewall, a Ranger texted a picture of it to a Ranger in Johnson City and when we stopped back in to that visitor center were able to arrange to get it back.

    Beautiful 1,500 Acres
We began our Saturday visit during COVID19 at the LBJ State Park where the state park ranger gave us detailed maps and driving instructions for both the State Park and the LBJ National Historical Park. Terrific information from friendly staff! There is no cost to tour the State Park or the LBJ National Historical Park, but there is a fee to tour the Texas White House, when it is available. Cross the Pedernales River and enter the LBJ Ranch, aka LBJ National Historical Park. First we saw the one-room old schoolhouse, then the reconstructed LBJ birthplace across the road from the Johnson Family Cemetery where the late President and his Lady Bird rest beneath beautiful huge trees! Then we drove thru the pastures, past the show barn and airstrip to the airplane hangar and the display of the Lockheed Jet Star the President call Air Force One-Half (no entrance permitted due to COVID19)! Also closed due to COVID19 were the Communications Trailers, Secret Service Command Post, Martin Barn and Klein Shop, so we definitely have a reason to return once they all reopen. Unfortunately, no tours of the Texas White House due to structural damage. We were able to walk around the house staying outside the walled fence. This was a phenomenal tour getting a glimpse of a bit over 1,500 beautiful acres (the large trees are magnificent) which remains a working ranch!

A window into LBJ’s life and presidency
As it was really cold during our visit, we limited our visit mostly to inside or car touring sites. Luckily, the National Park Service has an app that gives you a audio guided driving tour, right from the warmth of your car. This is a good thing as the ranch is a sprawling landscape. The ranch was often used for official business and LBJ’s house was known as the Texas White House. The exhibits provide a glimpse into LBJ’s life and presidency. The Texas White House is currently closed for structural reasons. There are both bison and Texas Longhorns on the property, which may be enough to hold a child’s attention. Recommended
