Parish Of The Assumption Of The Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral, Istria, Croatia

4.5 (1.520 reviews) Spent < 1 hour Ranking #1 in Porec Churches & Cathedrals

A designated World Heritage Site

Don't be fooled by the unassuming entrance to the Basilica, entrance is reasonable and worth every penny in my book for a glimpse of some of the treasures inside & out. Stand outs are the mosaics (Christ with the 12 apostles), 16th century bell tower & colonnaded atrium. Given the history and its tumultuous past dicing with fires & earthquakes its in remarkably good shape.

Worth a visit just to see the beautiful gold mosaics.
The Euphrasian Basilica in Porec is a well-preserved monument built in the 6th century in the time of Bishop Euphrasius and Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. The monument is located in the episcopal complex and is on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites - one of the best examples of early Byzantine art in the Mediterranean region. Firstly, we visited the Bishop's Palace and museum, then we climbed the stairs to the bell tower. It was well worth the effort and once we reached the top, we enjoyed spectacular views of Porec, the harbour and the coast. There were over 100 narrow wooden stairs to climb before we actually reached the bell tower but there are small places to rest if you get a bit breathless. This is definitely not suitable for people with walking difficulties and it is advisable to take your ear plugs with you as the bells chime loudly on the hour! Last but not least, the highlight of our visit was the Euphrasian Basilica with its glittering gold mosaics and mother of pearl inlaid marble, formerly part of a pagan altar from Roman times.

Interesting site, worth a visit and with stunning views of Porec
The Euphrasian Basilica is a UNESCO world heritage site so you should try and carve out some time in your trip to Porec to see it. There a many rooms to view including mosaics and ancient artefacts that speak of its long history. The basilica dome in the main chapel is very beautiful. Definitely push yourself to climb the 10 or so flight of wooden stairs to the top of the bell tower. You will be rewarded with fantastic panoramic views of Porec bay.
