    Quentesential Hong Kong
The Peak Tram is one of the quintessential attractions for all visitors to Hong Kong. This is a historic 1.4 km long funicular railway which climbs from the Lower Terminus at Hong Kong Park to the famous Victoria Peak, where you find the postcard scenes of Victoria Harbour as well as the Hong Kong and Kowloon Skylines down below. The tram normally runs from 7am to midnight daily. The Peak Tram started in 1888 and remains a popular way to travel up to The Peak. The journey time is around 10 minutes, taking in a couple stops along the way. Riding the Peak Tram is one of the most memorable experiences for tourists of Hong Kong. However, it is an extremely popular activity that usually means big crowds and long queues so consider going very early or later in the evening during normal times. Note: Presently as a result of the Coronavirus, crowds are very thin, meaning you can visit at pretty much any time and now and not worry about queues to board the Peak Tram. During normal times, queues by midday can reach 1 hour or more in length. Note: Tickets are purchased at the ticket booth at both the lower and upper terminus. However, if you have an Octopus Card, you can simply walk straight to the boarding platform and use your Smart Card, just like if you were entering an MTR Station. Note: Ticket prices are presently HK$37 for adult and HK$14 for a single ride. Return journeys cost HK$52 per adult and HK$23 per child. You can also purchase combo tickets that provide access to the Peak Tower Sky Terrace 428 viewing platform. Note: When you are ready to leave Victoria Peak, you can use the Peak Tram back down or take Bus Route 15 which winds its way back down to the city below. This is an equally exciting route with numerous sharp turns and delightful views. The bus depot is just behind the Peak Galleria shopping mall.

    Smooth interesting ride
This review is on the peak Tram only and does not include The Peak. I’ve done The Peak Tram many times before and this recent visit was to specifically experience the sixth generation Peak Tram which was launched last month. I read that there are additions of new tramcars, haulage and control systems, new rope and track rails, as well as refurbishments in the new Peak Tram. Well, it was indeed a more comfortable, quieter and faster ride. Really appreciated the roof windows too as now we get to see the sky and surrounding trees. The floor of the tram is not flat, it is done in waves, so be careful when you walk in the tram. I think it may have been done this way as a safety measure as the funicular goes through the steep hill. There are a few choices and combinations of tickets (which you can use octopus to pay) and we decided on a one way ticket up as it allows us flexibility of alternative transport coming down (which we took the bus down as it was more convenient since the bus takes you right down to train stations). See one of my photos for fares and combinations. The accessibility to the Peak Tram is not too good as there’s no train station nearby (it’s a 15 minute walk from the train station and it’s not a nice easy walk if you are not familiar with the road). If you are used to walking, then go for it. Just Google the map. Most locals will just walk.
