Amazing organ recital

I was privileged when visiting my sister in Apeldoorn a few years ago, to attend an evening service at the Grote Kerk. Unbeknownst to us a visiting well known Dutch organist was playing that evening which was a real treat. Not only is this a lovely old church, to be able to sing and also listen to hymns being played with such feeling was not only a real treat but a blessing.

    Cute church
We went for a christmas concert and it a very nice old church with good acoustics and a nice, simple and clean interior. It's close to the city centre, roughly 5 minute walk. It's walking distance to the Paleis het Loo.

Colossal neorenaissance style church with Wilhelmina in front
At the time this colossal church was built in 1892, Apeldoorn was just a rather small place. However, the vicinity of Het Loo castle one of the locations where the Oranje family was residing and the presence of other very wealthy villa inhabitants may explain size and rich ornamentation of the neorenaissance style building. The interior is more austere as is the case in many Protestant churches. After the death of Wilhelmina van Oranje in 1962 the church fell into disrepair. Plans to demolish the church in the 1970s were eventually abandoned. Wilhelmina got a statue in front of the building. Meant to be a realistic sculpture I found the resemblance with the actual person a bit lacking. But then, I am from a generation that knew Wilhelmina only as an old woman.
