Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park is a beautiful large park with several entrances. The Homestead Trolley is one way to get here. I enjoy the Homestead entrance, the Anhinga Trail, a boardwalk 0.8 mile of boardwalk, you always see an alligator, many birds, great white egrets, great blue herons, wood storks, cormorants,, moorhen. The Pinelands Trail is near, its another half mile boardwalk, but the environment is pine forest. You also have the Mahogony Hammock Trail also half a mile an almost Tarzan movie setting. Then you have half mile of West Lake through mangroves, the boardwalk ends, hurricane damage has not been repaired.

Homestead Trolley - Everglades National Park
Did not expect to find any access to Everglades during govt shutdown. Bit of Internet research led me to the Homestead Trolley. Homestead runs two trolleys to national parks_Biscayne and Everglades. I took the first Everglades trolley on Sun Jan 13 at 9AM. A great experience. It is free. Takes you to the Coe Visitor Center and the Royal Palms Visiitor Center. Enough time at Coe Visitor Center to get maps, passport stamps (this is open during shutdown) and a map. The amount of time at Royal Palm is for a nice walk around one of two paved paths. If you don’t have time, don’t want to be hassled with driving in, parking etc....this is the way to go. In two hours, I got a good overview of one major spot to visit (Royal Palms) and a good orientation to the park. Trolley is air conditioned and comfortable. Noticed that it has a handicapped lift for wheelchairs in the back. Free parking near the trolley for your car at Losner Park. I’m a huge National Park fan (visit 242 of the 418 units). I thought this was a nice way to access a huge park...especially if you only have a couple hours. See town website for more details.
