Ships Ahoy! Breathing life into 17th century Dutch galleons
The Batavia is a 17th century Dutch galleon in working order. This is the kind of ship that struck fear into the hearts of sailors from France, Spain and Britain in the day. It is truly beautiful and brilliantly maintained as a working museum. But that's only half the story! Across the street is the "Batavia Werf" - the working guts of this incredible piece of history. There, crafts-men and -women are faithfully rebuilding another ship - the "Seven Provinces" from the inside out. They use old methods to recreate every facet of these incredible sailing ships. A guide will show you how they carve every figurehead from scratch, training master wood carvers in the process. The sailmakers must prove their ability to create every needed stitch before they are allowed to stand behind the ropes in the sailmakers loft. Ropemakers, tacklemakers, every old craft is being built or rebuilt to the old standards - and the new. Very cool museum and nice for children
We had a lovely day at the Batavia Ship Wharf and museum. The ship itself is quite impressing but the findings in Flevoland are even more so.
