Rector's Palace, Dalmatia, Croatia

Beautiful building, nice art exhibits, only about a 30 minute stop

We visited the Rector's Palace because it was free with the Dubrovnik Card, but as it is one of the few more well-known sites in Old Town, we probably would have popped in regardless. It's a really beautiful building that has Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements, due to suffering damage from fires, explosions and an earthquake in the 15th Century and then different architects rebuilding different areas in their own styles. I wasn't really expecting much, other than recognising another Game of Thrones filming location (Season 2 when Daenerys visits the Spice King's mansion), but it had a lot of interesting art and artifacts to look at as well - largely Italian. It's worth a visit, but will probably only take about 30 minutes to see all there is to see.

Level of Architecture is Superb ??
Centrally located in the Old Town, the palace is worth a visit especially for the level of Architecture. Various works of art on show by numerous artists and you move from room to room show casing works of that time. We did this as part of the 3 day Dubrovnik card along with other trips and well worth the money.

The Rector's Palace is an interesting collection of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque style architecture
The Rector's Palace (Croatian: Knežev dvor) was built by the same Italian architect Onofrio della Cava of Naples, who built the city aqueduct and two fountains that bear his name in 1463. Over the century’s it has been damaged by earthquakes and rebuilt many times, serving as a watch house, prison, armory, and powder magazine. The Gothic ornaments were sculpted by Pietro di Martino of Milan, and the capitals on the exterior column’s porch, were reshaped in Renaissance style by Salvi di Michele of Florence, and a baroque style ornate staircase and a bell were added in the atrium. There was also in 1638 a statue of local rich shipowner Miho Pracat added, who is the only commoner in 1000 years to have his own statue. (He did make a considerable donation to the Republic). From the 14th century to 1808 it was the seat of the Minor Council and elected rector who governed Dubrovnik, and during his one-month term was unable to leave the building without the permission of the senate. In 1872 the Museum of Dubrovnik History Department moved into the building. Today the palace has been turned into the Cultural History Museum, with lots of local art effects including the original bronze striker figures from the Bell tower. TIP: Entrance into Rector’s Palace is free with the Dubrovnik Card or admission is 100KN ($16 USD). If you found this review informative please check the box below.
