Entrance into Dubrovnik
This is the main entrance in to the Dubrovnik Old Town. It is very interesting to see the fortification and the size of the massive city walls here and consider that it has been there since 1537. Although it is now gone, you can easily imagine the draw bridge that once was there. There is a statue of St. Blaise there and then great maps of the city layout hung on the wall. This entrance takes you right to the main street of the city, the Stradun. First thing you come to is a great fountain which, like most fountains in the city, is fed by water from the surrounding hills so it is quite pure and you can fill your water bottles from it.

Entering Old Town
The city busses will drop you right in front of the gate which is guarded by men in Medieval costumes in the evening when the sun is not too hot. On the wall is a map of the damage caused to the historical Old Town by the recent tragedy, the Homeland War in the 1990's. The Yugoslavian Army with it's partners bombed Dubrovnik from the hills above destroying buildings as well as boats in the harbour. Studying the current map of Croatia you can see on how a narrow strip of land the city stands, the attackers must have thought it would be easy to take over.
