Interesting church and the majestic painting of El Greco

One of the most famous and important paintings by the painter El Greco is located in the Church of Santo Tome. It is the burial of Count Orgaz. The scene of the painting depicts how they are waiting in heaven for the soul of the deceased Count Orgaz, while the eminent figures of the time attend the funeral of this noble knight from Toledo, who was known for his pious works of mercy and for the honesty of a good gentleman. In the painting, El Greco portrays also himself and Cervantes. The organization of the visit was quite correct. Its interior is worth visiting if only to enjoy the painting of El Greco.

El Greco's famous masterpiece, The Burial of Count Orgaz, is displayed here--Don't miss it!!
At this point we had seen hundreds of churches, cathedrals, Moorish and Jewish sites so architecturally this church does not stand out. HOWEVER, the art inside does!! The work of El Greco hangs here. This is not a museum with thousands of people moving through. It is small, much more intimate and the perfect place to view, admire and study a masterpiece by El Greco. Highly recommended visit.

    An expensive visit
3 Euros to see one painting by El Greco? OK, it's remarkable, but the church compared with many in Toledo is quite ordinary and it has obviously made a fortune from the painting which is displayed without any explanation or guide in English which I could see. Go to the Santa Cruz Museum where you can see several El Greco paintings (and for nothing if you're a senior with your passport). Better still visit the wonderful Santo Domingo convent where for 2.50 Euros you can see several El Greco altarpieces AND his coffin (viewed via a mirror) The place is in poor repair but the choir area containes a rather wonderful collection of ancient manuscripts, carved gravestones, tapestries and other art-works. There were only 2 other people there when I visited (compared with c30 at Santo Tome). I spent over an hour there and c 10 minutes at Santo Tome.
