Catedral de Santa Maria de Siguenza, Castile-La Mancha, Spain

Pay the entrance fee… it’s worth it!

Realised that the only way to see the cathedral was by paying for the visit, which seemed pricey, but did include an audio guide. Somewhat reluctantly shelled out the relevant entrance fee, and hoped that we wouldn’t regret it. However, would have to say it was perhaps one of the most interesting visits to such a place that we have made in many years, really informative about the history of Sigüenza and the cathedral, as well as important people associated with it. What we hadn’t expected was some of the serious treasures, architecture, and works of art that have ended up here. Included in the fee was entrance to the museum nearby. The famous tomb of the Doncel de Sigüenza was particularly impressive. Have to admit we came out saying that it was worth every penny (or euro in this case)

The Cathedral of Sigüenza, officially Catedral de Santa María de Sigüenza, wonderful historical place worth visiting
The Cathedral of Sigüenza, officially Catedral de Santa María de Sigüenza, is the seat of the Bishop of Siguenza. The construction started in the 12th century, and different parts were under construction through the 16th century. There is a big mixture of styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, Neoclassical and Baroque. One of the most impressive place here is the burial of Martín Vázquez de Arce, the Doncel de Sigüenza. The sepulcher placed on three lions is under a niche in semicircular arch, with the statue of the Doncel in alabaster, is dressed in armor and with the cross of Saint James in the chest, the fist of a sword and a small dagger can be seen in the waist, the head is covered with a bonnet that fits completely, but what stands out most is that it is not a recumbent figure, asleep, but that he is reclining, with one leg over the other and supports the half-built arm, in the attitude of reading a book that he holds open in his hands, in the front of the tomb two pages hold the coat of arms and it is ornamented with delicate carvings in candilieri. All the work is polychrome. The date of realization of this funerary set is between 1486, the year of the death of the Doncel and 1504.

    Not to be missed.
I've visited many Cathedrals in Spain but this one is the tiops for me. The sheer atmosphere, amazing lighting, it is simply beautiful. Not overly large but beautiful proportions. Worth visiting Siguenza for alone. By the way the rest of the town is superb too.
