Subak Museum, Bali, Indonesia

4.0 (24 reviews) Spent Ranking #21 in Tabanan Speciality Museums

Definitely worth visiting

The museum had an excellent female guide who could provide useful and insightful knowledge related to subak. Although there was not much to do, the place was also pretty good in maintenance. Definitely worth visiting at least once, especially if you're interested in agriculture or a sustainable lifestyle.

Excellent overview of Bali's Irrigation culture
Set on a shaded hillside with water features and gardens, this modern museum should be your starting point to understanding Bali's Unesco recognized Subak Water Culture. After the 15K admission, an English-speaking guide led our tour of the large single floor space bordered by a score of exhibits and dioramas with implements, tools, and sculptures filling the interior. The Subak System that began in the 10th C with irrigation channels to provide a steady flow of water to its farmers grew into a cultural organization set up much like a modern corporation with a hierarchical leadership, scheduled area meetings with penalties for late attendance, and structured long term projects of tunnels, dams, and canals. We learned about the 2 and 4 finger water allocation, a printed planting almanac, community involvement in creation and worship of Water Temples. This one hour education helped my wife and I understand the structure, crop sequence, and operation of all those rice terraces we have visited in Bali.
