Behind the medieval walls, is a Renaissance château which is being restored. You can view the living quarters, chapel, kitchen as well as claim up a smaller tower inside for amazing views. 4.5Chateau de Parentignat(202 reviews) - Morgan's tour of the Chateau Monday: Spent 1-2 hours Castles • Parks • Art Museums
The chateau of Parentignat was built between 1707 and 1720 by Anne-Francois de Lastic, Marquess of Sieujac and Captain of a Royal infantry regiment, on the foundations of an old fortress. The chateau remains in the family to this day and is the object of an extensive restoration programme. The landscaped gardens can be viewed from the terrace at the back of the chateau, which is lined with heirloom roses and fantastic orange trees in their original 18th century pots. The gaiety of this green and pleasant "natural" garden provides a stark contrast with the formal geometry of the lawns in the front courtyard which have been restored recently, along with the avenue of lime trees leading to the chateau's entrance. The chateau has always been renowned for being so sumptuously appointed. Its furniture and art collections have always been exceptional. A Geocaching session in the park of the castle is a must for a family attraction !See more..

Impressive ruin with lovely views in the right weather. When we were there, having done the nice walk from the car park in thick mist, there were hints of the views of the Loire. 4.0Château de Chavaniac(92 reviews) - Often overlooked treasure Speciality Museums • Castles
This quiet but wonderful castle is a must-see for Americans in Auvergne. It's the birthplace of Lafayette and houses many of his treasures from the American Revolution including a lock of Washington's hair, Ben Franklin's ring, and original letters from the hero himself to important Americans and Napoleon. The castle itself is well-preserved and Lafayette's chambers have been restored--there are also audio-box tours in English, a gift shop, and an exquisite garden. When you see that American flag flying by the French one, you'll know you're welcome. So much history in that house; don't miss it!See more..
See more..

4.5Chateau de Flecheres(75 reviews) - A work in progress but worth a visit Castles
We have passed by this imposing chateau a number of times now so decided to finally pay it a visit. Lovely friendly welcome. What it doesn't make clear on the website is the visits have to be guided and are at set times. We arrived about 15:00 and joined a tour halfway through. We were permitted to wait (about 15 minutes) until the start of the next tour to see the rest! Murals are amazing especially the Perspectives room. It is a work in progress and it is being lovingly restored. Our Guide on the day was passionate and informative and we loved the way she engaged the children in the whole experience. History became fun. Tour is all in French but you handed a book with English translations on arrival and takes about 1 hour 15mins. For E9.00 it is great value and for a little bit extra you can visit the park & gardens - the day we went it was raining.See more..

So we went back during the week to find - yes open :) its really awesome inside. The little show the guy puts on inside is pretty funny especially because of where you are and its pretty cool for little ones I think.
