Aleutian World War II National Historic Area, Alaska, United States

5.0 (6 reviews) Spent Ranking #6 in Aleutian Islands National Parks

Amazing Views

The road up to the Historic area is Ulatka Drive, off of Ballyhoo road just past Resolve Marine Salvage. It's the only steep road up the mountain. It's an amazing place with incredible views. It's easy to spend several hours wandering around. If you like to hike it provides easy access to hike up Ballyhoo. If hiking you want to grad a pass from the Ounalashka Corporation office behind the Grand Aleutian hotel. Most of the land is private property so you need a pass for access. There are old bunkers and gun emplacements and lots of old building remains. Wild flowers abound in the summer, ground squirrels, eagles and other birds. Sometimes to can see whales feeding all around the island. Super cool place and definitely a must visit if you have time.

Ranked top ten in US by US Today!
Just back from a business trip to Unalaska. Delayed getting out because of weather and started to wander around. Stumbled upon the WWII center right at the airport and was blown away by the story the center told. The bombing in 1942 by the Japanese, the internment of the Aleuts by the military and the invasion and recapture of Kiska and Attu. Well done!

    Little known slice of History
Few people know that the Aleutian Islands were attacked, and some of them were occupies by the Japanese during World War II. This visitor center/museum tells the story from the Japanese attack. The relocation of the Aleute people to terrible conditions, and the story of the US Military presence in the Aleutians and the retaking of the occupies islands from thr Japanese. All of this is well presented through artifacts, photographs and letters to tell the story. The exhibits tell the story of US GI's in terrible conditions through the war protecting the western frontier of the United States.
