This fort had so much to offer than we thought. Great stop to stretch your legs after a long drive. The for was very large at one time, but you can still get the perspective of how everything was laid out, and some walls and fireplaces are still standing. Great tour guides. Nice spot that is dog friendly. Clear pathed trails. Nice breeze coming through the plains on a warmer day. The Junior Park Rangers were very friendly. This sight is under construction but there was a mobile office pods in the parking lot that offers a gift shops with a bunch of fun & informative books, etc. See more..
  3. 4.0 Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge (1 review)
    - Nice Natural Area
Spent 2-3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
We love National Wildlife Refuges. At the right time of the year we are able to see all sorts of wildlife. Particularly migrating birds. But more. Sometimes elk, deer, bison. This is a hidden Refuge. And relatively new (deeded to the US [you and me] in 2012). It's pretty special. From the Interstate, the surrounding is high grassy meadows. Then the land rises slightly with a connifer forest. Then there is quite a canyon cut by the Rio Mora. Simply beautiful. The road into the Refuge descends into the canyon. A bit steep at times. At the bottom is the old ranch with numerous buildings. It is really quite lovely. We hope to return soon. See more..
  4. 4.0 Juniper Trail - Rio Mora Nwr (1 review)
    - New, Nice Forest Trail
    Spent 2-3 hours Hiking Trails
This trail is brand new! Grand opening mid-October 2022. We were among the first to walk the trail. It is just great. As a new trail, it is well marked and lightly traveled. In places there is no real trail, just the flags and cairns marking where to walk. We really enjoyed our hike. The trail begins in the high meadows by the parking lot. It then winds its way up a ridge and into the forest. The path alternates between grassy areas and rocky outcrops. Nowhere is is difficult. About mid-way, there is a nice overlook and descriptive panel about the Rio Mora below. We saw little wildlife. But the Ranger indicated that there are bison in the area which can periodically be seen. We really liked the trail and would return. See more..
