Readily accessible from the scenic road, this unique feature of the park made us pretty curious where it came from. The information sign explains it further. The balls are pretty slippery and my sister got abrasions after slipping from one of them. So please, be very careful if trying to step on them to pose for photos. There is also a trail to the side of it which leads to a prairie dog town. Too bad it was extremely hot when we visited, we did not go deep and only stayed at the balls. See more..
  3. 5.0 Little Missouri River (2 reviews)
    - The Instrument that Shapes TRNP
Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Bodies of Water
    Little Missouri River image
Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the North Dakota badlands owe much of their beauty and existence to the Little Missouri River. While the river is both a part of the North and South Units, I have placed in the North Unit because here it is so visibly evident in the creating the beauty of the North Unit canyon. For me the North Unit is so much prettier and amazing. Nearly every pullover and attraction of the North Unit is within view of the river. Its twists and turns are every bit as important and the the colors of layered sediment in the badlands. You do get to cross it on Hwy 85 travelling between the units. However, if I get back, I'd really like to kayak it. Either way, its importance to the park is the instrument of its creation. See more..
  4. 5.0 Watford City Children's Play Park (1 review)
    - Fun park for the kids

After backcountry camping for a few weeks, tradition is we get pizza from Pizza Pie on the Fly and eat at the park. There are nice tables in the shade and plenty of garbage cans. It overlooks a sand volleyball court and an interesting veterans memorial. The kids really like the playground though they are starting to grow out of it. See more..
  5. 4.5 Little Missouri National Grassland (32 reviews)
    - Great Inland sea
National Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Scenic Drives
    Little Missouri National Grassland image
The national grassland is a massive amount of property that surrounds all three units of TRNP. While the north Unit is surrounded by this green plain that is so endless it almost looks like the sea, South Unit has a mixture of plains, plateaus and badlands. It is here in the National Grassland, that our group took a two hour trail ride with Medora Stables. The views atop the grassland plateaus are every bit as amazing as the view from the overlooks like Painted Canyon. It is also here that we saw what brought Roosevelt to the Dakotas, cattle ranching. Dozens of cows were grazing here in the protected grasslands high above. However, in addition to cattle grazing, the designated area has Ponderosa Pine forest and badland buttes. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and was so glad we were able to connect to the Old West that brought Roosevelt here. See more..
  6. 4.5 Long X Trading Post Visitor Center (25 reviews)
    - So much more than a Visitor Center
    Visitor Centers
Long X Trading Post Visitor Center image
This Visitor Center is so much more than a visitor center. Though it offers tourist information, the three floors of historical artifacts from the Watford City area are well worth seeing. It is free. Be sure to see the HUGE petrified wood inside near the entrance. It is open 10-5. Thursday is Dogs on the Deck (hot dogs, music, and fun) that benefit a different charity every week. In the rear of this building is a liquor store that has different hours. Wonder about the name? The Long X Trail was where 4000 longhorns were driven from Texas to this area in 1884. See more..
  7. 4.5 Longhorn Pullout (6 reviews)
    - Long Live the Long Horns
    Spent < 1 hour Lookouts
    Longhorn Pullout image
50 pound's of hamburger on a 1000 pound of meanness. That's how cowboys described the cattle they drove up the Long X trail from Texas to North Dakota and Montana. The longhorns were scrounged out of the sage brush after the Civil War and massed in to herds of 5,000 to 10,000, then herded north through open range, following the gradual greening of the rangeland from south to north. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints image
Sunday worship services will be held at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes that through Jesus Christ all humankind may enjoy eternal life with their families in God’s kingdom (see John 3:16). We also believe that we lived with God as spirits before we were born (see Romans 8:16) and that according to His plan of happiness we came to earth to receive physical bodies in order to learn and grow. We also believe that, through the work done in temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, family relationships can last forever. In order to receive these blessings, we must seek to know and follow God’s will, as revealed by holy scriptures and living prophets, and live righteously. See more..
