   River Rafting & Tubing
   We recently did the tubing on the Middle Loup River. We met at Ewoldt's Grocery, which was convenient for buying water to take with us on the trip. We were outfitted with really nice tubes and were driven to a drop off point outside of town. We did the 4.5 hour trip, and it took all of 4.5 hours without any stops. The scenery of the Nebraska Sandhills is quite stunning. We went on a Tuesday, and we were the only ones on the river. It was extremely peaceful, and we had a chance to enjoy nature. The highway and railroad tracks are never very far from the river, but you really don't notice them. (It is nice to know that you could get help if you need it). At the end, they pick you and took us back to the store. All of this for just $20 per tube--a bargain in my opinion. Tip--bring lots of sunscreen and insect repellant.    Don't let the unassuming facade fool you. Inside this little residential looking house is a wealth of Nebraska talent and treasure. Beautiful paintings, sculpture, castings, carvings and other art mediums await your eye & senses. If you are passing through (and lucky enough) it will be open and you are in for a treat!    The Cowpoke has been a fixture in downtown Thedford NE for decades, frequented by very enthusiastic locals. The 'Poke takes pride in its selection of beer and huge servings of food from the heartland. After a recommendation from a clerk at a nearby service station a friend and I stopped in for an early supper. I had a hearty meal of ribs, beans and 'slaw, and I appreciated that the coleslaw was homemade (tangy!). My traveling buddy had a smothered burrito platter-- hot, spicy and filling with homemade spanish rice. All this was washed down with icy cold beer. Food and drinks arrived promptly. The waitress was friendly, chatting with us about local Thedford happenings. The restrooms were spare, but clean. We were there on a Friday night, and a number of locals drifted in to watch Ice Hockey on the big TV screens. After suitable amounts of beer were imbibed, the place livened up to the point where it was getting a bit noisy, so we left. See more..
