  3. 5.0 Spearfish Creek (6 reviews)
    - Incredible Shaper of Spearfish Canyon
Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Bodies of Water
    Spearfish Creek image
One of the premier sights in the Black Hills is Spearfish Canyon. It is a near vertical heavily wooded canyon created by this creek cutting through the hills. What you have is some of the most amazing scenery in the western US. You have high, near vertical canyon walls, but they are covered with large Ponderosa Pine and Black Hill Spruce with free flowing, cool, sparkling water. Our group had the opportunity to not only see the creek while driving, we also got to experience the creek fly fishing. My friend caught a nice, wild Rainbow Trout while I got to see a Mountain Goat and baby come to the creek for water. It was just incredible to see the water that shapes the canyon and brings life to it. See more..

  8. 5.0 Spearfish Creek Wine Bar (1 review)
    - GREAT WINE AND GREAT MUSIC
    Bars & Clubs
Spearfish Creek Wine Bar is very easy to get to, located on Grant Street just off Main Street. They have a summer music series with singer/song writers and bands that come from all over the country to play in their establishment. One artist came from Ohio and another from Reno, Nevada. They have a beautiful back patio area that has a raised area for the singers and bands to play so everyone in the house has a great view. We didn’t sit inside, however they have very nice tables and chairs as well as a couple couches to lounge in. The bathrooms are nice and clean. The owner/operators served us and were very pleasant. They have a nice small selection of craft beer on tap and in bottles/can as well as a nice wine selection. They serve a meat and cheese trays and pizza too. The atmosphere is very laid back and relaxing. One thing I really enjoyed seeing is they are dog friendly in the patio area as long as your dog is friendly and well behaved. Everything was reasonably priced. Definitely worth a stop to support the local economy. See more..
  9. 5.0 Community Caves (1 review)
    - A superb hike/climb to one of the natural treasures on the Spearfish Canyon Rim.
Spent 1-2 hours Caverns & Caves
    Community Caves image
A wonderful Hike, but also demanding. Not for small children or those with physical issues. This trail is steep and rocky. But worth the view. This wonderful location is not marked by highway signs! But, with some local help and web info you can find it. The caves are about three miles from the local country club in Spearfish. Located on the east rim, near the top of the canyon and tucked back into an narrow ravine, you can see these caves if you know what to look for or have a spotting scope. From an unmarked parking area along the highway, you cross Spearfish Creek. The pathway is not marked, but just follow the trail others have left. (this is an adventure, and will add to your story) eventually you will come to the main unmarked, but well used pathway heading through the trees and up the draw between the canyon walls. The trek becomes more demanding as you climb and there are points where you actually are on the rock field itself. A small stream flows through this area and over some of the rocks too, which adds to the difficultly in some spots. A normal time is around 30 minutes for the ascent to the caves. Bring your camera as you will want to have it when you reach them, For the very brave their is a "goat trail" leading off to the right of the caves that brings you out on the face of the canyon wall, looking directly down on the highway far below. The view is worth the adrenaline rush. Please be careful, this is a fatal plunge to the canyon below from this point. However, hiking families do come up to the caves. With care and respect for the conditions, it will be a lifetime experience for all who enjoy this adventure. And, please respect Mother Nature here. Birds and other creatures make this place their home. The caves are a great serene and beautiful place to rest and contemplate the wonders of our earth. This is one of the spots in the Black Hills that still remains as it was when the Hills were formed. See more..
  10. 4.5 Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway (956 reviews)
    - Beautiful drive after staying in Deadwood
    Scenic Drives
    Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway image
We missed the Spearfish Scenic Byway on our last trip west, but were so glad we experienced it this time around. Take 14a out of Spearfish to Hwy. 85. We stopped often to enjoy the scenery and flip a fishing line in the water. There are several waterfalls along the way too. We wished we had left enough time to hike the Devil's Bathtub Trail. However, since Devil's Bathtub is near private property, parking for the trail is near the hydroelectric plant and there are creek crossings which would likely take extra time. We left ourselves a reason to go back. We also hoped to have an Indian taco in Cheyenne Crossings, but the wait was 2 hours at noon. We grabbed a picnic lunch out of our cooler and were on our way. I wouldn't drive far out of the way to take this scenic byway, but it's a beautiful option if you're in the area. See more..
  11. 4.5 D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery (433 reviews)
    - worth to take a look
    History Museums
D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery image
It's one of the attraction in Spearfish, the admission is free, there are volunteer staff greet you on the bridge, telling you that you can buy fish food to feed the fish. there are different pack size, minimum is $1 for a small bag. we bought one for the kids to feed the fish. There is a underwater viewing area, historic fish runs, old railcar, a boat, etc. however, due to COVID, many indoor places are closed, e.g. can't go into the Booth House, can't enter the Von Bayer museum, even the railcar, you can't get on it to take a look, quite disappointed, so you can just see those outdoor exhibit, there is 1-2 trails you can walk, but not much to see. Anyway, it's a good place for family with young kids. See more..

  13. 4.5 Devil’s Bathtub (98 reviews)
    - Be prepared!
    Bodies of Water
    Devil’s Bathtub image
Imagine your wife seeing a sign on the side of the road pointing out parking for Devil's Bathtub. Of course, I said "Let's check it out!" The parking lot was packed with no one in sight. My husband, son, and I begin walking along the creek on a narrow path. We come across others returning from their trek, telling us it's well worth it. We keep going along, into the forest, up, down, and around trees, rocks, and cliff faces. Clouds loom over the canopy. We keep going without knowing what lies ahead. Soon lots of people are coming back in swimwear with towels and such. Thunder and sprinkles, but we have come a long way crossing the creek many times on rocks and trees. It has become a path to conquer. We take cover under trees here and there and finally an overhang in the cliff wall. When the rain stops, we find Devil's Bathtub empty of people. What a wonderful hike and a beautiful path. Take water shoes if you can and plan for several hours! See more..

    - Wonderful Park!!!!
Spent < 1 hour Bodies of Water • Parks • Playgrounds
    Spearfish City Park image
What an awesome park! You can tell history, education and family are important to the people of Spearfish. It was a super clean, graffiti-gree park with the beautiful spearfish creek swiftly flowing through it. A man was fly fishing, kids were tubing down the creek, families were picnicking, bird chirping... like a Norman Rockwell painting for sure! Lots of historical signage explaining the fish hatchery and other historic buildings on site. The hatchery was very neat - with some of the biggest trout I've ever seen. Very well kept with walking paths. There was also a veteran's memorial area adjacent to the park. What a really cool town! Makes me want to move here (except for the hellish winters :) See more..

  26. 4.0 Iron Creek Lake (5 reviews)
    - Small but beautiful lake in the Black Hills.
Spent More than 3 hours Bodies of Water
Iron Creek Lake is a small lake in the northern end of the Black Hills, about 15 miles out of Spearfish. Roads to get there are gravel, typically rough and dusty. The traffic can be surprisingly heavy in the summer months with camper, ATV and car traffic. There are a number of biking, hiking and snowmobile trails in the immediate area. Iron Creek Lake is actually a dam. Nice trail around the lake, a small store with paddle boat rentals in the summer. Camping spots available. It's a very popular place for camping with some permanent residents as well. Fishing and a small beach. It's busy in the summer due to it's proximity to Spearfish. It can be quite crawded. Worth a visit if you are touring the National Forest backroads! See more..
