  2. 5.0 Windsor Castle Park (189 reviews)
    - Great park, nice more of the river
    Parks
    Windsor Castle Park image
This was our first time visiting Windsor Castle Park, after my wife read about it on Facebook. The park sits near the historic section of Smithfield. The park has some great walking trails that weave in & out of the woods, so you get some shade as well. We really liked the docks where you could soak in the creek & Pagan River, which included a couple of docks for fishing & kayaking. The trails around the park were pretty much gravel or hard-pack, so it was easy to walk. The trail would be considered “easy,” so all levels of hikers can enjoy them. All in all, we really liked the park. We’ll definitely come back and try a few more of the trails…followed by a stroll around old Smithfield (contains some small cafes, antique shops and a few others). We recommend you check out both. Jeff was an AWESOME help with making my son's 16th bday not only special but quite memorable. He truly went above and beyond with helping me decide on a very fun cake for this occasion. Not only was the cake a hit to look at (a lot of attention to detail, very neat) the flavor of chocolate and vanilla were quite scrumptious, very moist and the icing... TO DIE FOR! I would highly recommend Jeff's cakes for any special occasion. You won't be disappointed :-) See more..

    Darden's Country Store image
Stopped in just to look around. Were told the country ham on roll sandwiches (only $1) are good. We bought two and ate them in the parking lot. They lied to us. They weren't good. They were AMAZING! We are both chefs living in Louisville KY and we know good country ham. Sorry Louisville but Dardens country ham was the best we've ever tasted. Sliced thin, the way a country ham should be and salty. Yum, yum and yum! We ended up buying 1/2 lb of thinly sliced country ham and some hoop cheese. Stopped by a grocery for some crackers and fruit and we had an amazing, relaxing dinner at our hotel. Loved this ham so much, we're going to order some for Christmas dinner and have it shipped to Louisville. See more..

  24. 3.5 Fort Huger (28 reviews)
    - Interesting browse through River fort
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Historic Sites
    Fort Huger image
The name attracted us - we're from SC, and SC produced a family of Huger patriots . This fort, intended to protect Richmond from Federal incursions up the James River, let us see its importance in Confederate defense, but also its powerlessness once ironclads entered the picture. Signs explaining how the rather large fort was designed help you visualize the scene. We were surprised how very wide the river is at its mouth and even this far up...so it was well worth the trip. Use your GPS to get there - Highway signs not always great - and walk a bit from the parking lot to the fort. That walk helps you see the terrain that was a protection from the land side. See more..
