    - Great little hike

This is a great little hike. The first half of the trail is fairly easy but once you get half way it becomes steeper and a little more challenging where there are small loose rocks. it is a 3/4 mile hike that goes to a lookout at the rim of the canyon above Spearfish Canyon Lodge. It is an easy climb and only steep toward the top. The view is really pretty. You can rest at the top before starting back down. Your legs will get tired going down as they are the brakes! We did encounter a small snake which is to be expected. We didn't rush and the hike took us about an hour and a half. See more..
  2. 4.5 Roughlock Falls Nature Area (87 reviews)
    - Beautiful falls and easy walk

You can either drive on a dirt road or park on a paved road and hike a mile to the falls. Hubby and I hiked it. Easy hike and falls were amazing. Path was a bit muddy due to melting snow. There was a lot of damaged trees in this area from a tornado a while back. Also, you can either hike from here to Spearfish Falls 1.5 miles, or just drive back down the road a bit and park. 3. 4.5 Spearfish Falls (37 reviews)
    - My Favorite Waterfall in Spearfish Canyon
    Spent < 1 hour Waterfalls
    Spearfish Falls image
Spearfish Canyon has many waterfalls, but my favorite is this 45' fall where two creeks and roads converge in Savoy near Latchstring Restaurant. In fact the restaurant is perched on the same bluff as the fall which gives it such a great view but you can not see the waterfall. In the restaurants SE parking lot you only need to walk about 10 paces to see the creek and the top of the falls. However, this view is nothing special. To see the real falls take the trail on the other side of the restaurant which winds down to cross the creek to a great platform along the creek for viewing the falls. I will say we saw PM after lunch and I think it would look better AM with the sun shining on it. Still it is an impressive drop and a consistent flow. Along the way there are some great places for pictures in the canyon. The trail there and back is less than a mile with only 60 of elevation so really anyone can do. See more..

    - The full hike or drive to the top are both nice!
    Waterfalls

You can get to this waterfall by trailhead for a 2mile round trip hike or drive to the top of the hill. If you decide on top of the hill, it is a nice walk with various lookout platforms. I recommend going in the morning to beat the summer heat. See more..

    - Easy to See Why They Chose This Spot

    Spearfish Canyon image
If you continue up the dirt road from the Roughlock Falls Recreation Area for a mile or two you will come to a place in the canyon the was used to film Dances with Wolves, the final scene. Granted we saw in late summer with the creek flowing but the movie shows in winter with snow. It is easy to see why they choose this site as the canyon here is also beautiful. just another thing for you to do and see in Spearfish Canyon. See more..
