    Mountain Master Off-Road Tours image
We took this tour on a whim after planning a visit to the area and learning that sometimes the dunes can treat visitors to unexpected sandstorms. Initially we had envisioned climbing the dunes or sand boarding, however we stumbled upon Mountain Master Off-Road Tours and decide to book the Dunes and Falls Tour. Our tour guide was Kyle, the owner and everyone agreed this was a favorite from our vacation. Kyle went out of his way to make sure everyone in our party was enjoying the tour, and he shared so much history of the area with us. If you are looking for an epic way to see parts of the dunes that you won’t be able to access without a guide, book a tour! See more..

This was so much fun! Sand boarding down the sand dunes was my favorite thing I did in Colorado. Here are some tips: 1. If you are looking to rent a sand board or sled, there is a place called Great Sand Dunes Oasis. This place is close to the sand dunes and is on your way to and back. It’s only $20 for a board or a sled. You are able to rent them but gotta return to the store before they close. 2. The visitor fee to the sand dunes is $25. 3. I would recommend wearing sandals or water shoes to the sand dunes. There is quite a walk to the actual sand dunes. There is an area in the middle that you have to cross that have water flowing through. So expect to get your feet wet. Plus if you are renting a sand board/ sled, they recommend you to use it barefoot or with socks on. See more..
  3. 4.5 Zapata Falls (463 reviews)
    - Worth the drive and hike to the beautiful falls!
    Waterfalls

We were happy to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle to drive up to the parking lot. The drive is under construction, so it may be better in the future. Just drive slow and steadily. Once we parked, it was a lovely walk to the stream. A bit steep at times for people not yet used to the higher elevation, but certainly do able, especially with some benches along the way to catch our breath. We walked across the rocks and snow over a stream, then kind of hugged the rock walks to get into the cave. We were so lucky to see the waterfalls half frozen. After enjoying that for a bit, we walked around a bend to see the part of the falls that was running. So pretty! We lucked out that it wasn't too crowded, so we could just be there to take it in for a bit without being rushed out, or having to share with toomey people. Worth the trip. It was a nice thing to do after going to Great Sand Dunes National Park. See more..
  4. 4.5 South Zapata Lake (10 reviews)
    - Challenging Hike with Beautiful Scenery: Respect It
    Bodies of Water
    South Zapata Lake image
What a beautiful hike with the dramatic changes in elevation and the spectacular alpine views of the lake! This hike was certainly a highlight of our visit to the area. At the same time, the generally steep incline and the elevation got to these two Texans born during the Kennedy-Johnson administrations. We took our time and spent 10.5 hours on the hike. Be sure to bring adequate water and food for this day trip, and be prepared to cross the creek three times, which may well involve wading through it. None of this is bad; just be prepared. We met a fellow in his 20's from Boston on the trail who, though being an experienced hiker, was not yet acclimated to the elevation and was struggling. If you are not from an area with high elevation, be sure to adjust for a day or so before attempting this memorable hike. See more..
  5. 4.0 Colorado Gators Reptile Park (293 reviews)
    - Neat place
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Colorado Gators Reptile Park image
Colorado Gators began in 1977 as a fish farm. The geothermal well is 2050 ft deep and 87 degrees. In 1987, the first alligators were brought in as 'garbage disposals' for dead fish. Some of these original gators are now 12 feet long. There are many species of reptiles on our farm, most of which come from uninformed pet owners. We take care of these animals and display them for education of the public. See more..
  6. 3.5 San Luis Lakes State Park (30 reviews)
    - Watch out for the sand fleas
    State Parks
San Luis Lakes State Park image
Our Back-up due to the fact The Great Sand Dunes SP was booked 5 months out. Great Views, no shade except for metal Table cover. Dusty gravel road to the paved loops. We were there at the end of May and didn't know about the sand Fleas until it was too late. Ankles to knees ate up! WARNING! We saw children playing in the sand all afternoon, hope they recover. We would return..with much more bug spray. See more..
  7. 3.5 Great Sand Dunes Oasis (22 reviews)
    - Definitely an “oasis” near the Great Dune Sands National Park
Spent More than 3 hours Gear Rentals
    Great Sand Dunes Oasis image
This is the ONLY place within 20-30 miles near the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Because of Covid, the building is not open to the public and one needs masks to order anything. Our experience has been very good and we ordered a couple of meals (sandwich and salad) from the restaurant which were really high quality, plentiful and delicious. It appears a bit run down, but has a pretty much everything you could want and everyone who helped us was very nice. Make sure and check the hours, depending on the day, the restaurant closes at 4, not sure about the other part. See more..
  8. 3.5 San Luis State Park (9 reviews)
    - Impressive Surrounding Views
Spent 1-2 hours State Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas

The state park is relatively small and while the views on the park are limited relatively to the lake, the views of the Great Dunes and surrounding mountain ranges are simply amazing. This is worth a stop for a while to enjoy the surroundings. See more..
