  4. 4.5 Cold Harbor Battlefield Park (128 reviews)
    - Visitor Center was Closed
    Battlefields
    Cold Harbor Battlefield Park image
So when I finally got to the visitor center after stopping at the Garthright House and the cemetery, I made my way to the Cold Harbor Visitor center. There is a decent sized parking lot there and some information signs. I looked at these first and then tried to enter the Visitor Center. It was closed. I tried to call the number on the sign to find out why, but the number didn't work. I then called the number in the NPS brochure and talked to a very nice man. The Visitor Center was closed due to power outages in the area that were affecting them. He gave me info over the phone about the hiking trails and the one-way road that goes through the park (and I told him about the phone number issue; if in doubt just look in the brochure for their number). As it was super cold and windy, I opted to just do the drive through the battlefield. There were three stops with signs about the battle and troop movements. It was very well done and informative. 5. 4.5 Governor's Antiques & Architectural Materials Ltd. (21 reviews)
    - Vast selection and range of prices
Spent 2-3 hours Art Galleries • Antique Shops • Flea & Street Markets
Governor's Antiques & Architectural Materials Ltd. image
You want to allow some time for your visit as the selection is so large. Even if you're not interested in buying, it is worth visiting just to see all the items -- particularly the outdoor items -- that they have from years gone by. I was looking for iron gates and fencing. All of the staff were very helpful. They provided valuable input and were willing to help me find the less expensive items. Mary in particular went out of her way to retrieve and price items I'd seen (even when I told her the wrong place to look for them). She also carried my purchases and loaded my car. In general, I would describe the prices of the ron gates and fencing as reasonable but not cheap. The prices are lower than at stores in the DC area. See more..
  6. 4.5 Cold Harbor Battlefield Park & Garthright House (14 reviews)
    - A great way to see history
    Battlefields
Cold Harbor Battlefield Park & Garthright House image
This park is managed by the Hanover County VA Parks & Recreation. It is directly across the road from The Cold Harbor Visitor Center of the Richmond National Battlefield Park. The Garthright House is not open. The park has a parking lot at the start of about a 1 mile walking trail that takes you to various places on the Union line during the battle of Cold Harbor. This path is paved with asphalt & easy to walk. There are 14 different stops on this trail & each stop has a sign which provides information on what happened here during the battle. There is no admission to this park & it is a must do if you are visiting Cold Harbor. See more..
  7. 4.5 Cold Harbor National Cemetery (10 reviews)
    - 150 year battle anniversary
    Cemeteries
    Cold Harbor National Cemetery image
I was successful in my search to find the grave of my civil war era Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity brother Lt. Edwin S. Rogers from Maine fighting on the Union side, that by chance, was found dying on the battlefield among the many dead and wounded by another fraternity brother from Alabama, fighting on the confederate side. He died in his arms of his southern brother, a remarkable chance meeting, and very touching story. Hundreds of soldiers that died in the fighting were buried hastily due to the sheer volume of casualties at the time, so most were not able to be individually identified when reinterrment happened a year later. Near his grave is a monument to honor those many many brave men, that gave the ultimate sacrifice, whose names we do not know and by circumstance, are not fortunate enough to have a headstone. 9. 4.0 Laura D's Salon & Spa (4 reviews)
    - Consistently excellent
    Spent 1-2 hours Spas
Stylists are consistently excellent. I've been going since 2005 and have had four different stylists. Each one has been professional and talented. I have very thick hair, yet they are able to find the right techniques to make my hair look great. Salon is welcoming; staff have great rapport with each other. It is the kind of place where you develop a relationship and pay for highly trained staff - but it doesn't break the bank. I'm very frugal but consider this a great value. A bonus is the out of this world head massage and just general kindness shown by the stylists and front desk staff. See more..
