    - Excellent stop for history and trivia buffs alike

    Ellwood Manor image
Located off Rt 20, Ellwood Manor has a long history, mostly linked to the Civil War. While the house itself is worth a visit for its historical significance, the family graveyard is a must for those interested in historical trivia. There lies the left arm of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, wounded by his own men in a tragic nighttime accident during the Battle of Chancellorsville. After the limb was amputated, an admirer brought it to the family estate at Ellwood and buried it in the family plot. Just follow the path through the cornfield and you'll find it under the big shade tree on the hill. See more..

Grave of Stonewall Jackson's Arm image
Perhaps one of the best known stories of the Civil War is the amputation of General Stonewall Jackson's arm at Wilderness Tavern following the battle of Chancellorsville. Owing to a family connection with the Lacy family, owners of Ellwood, the arm was retrieved from the pile of severed limbs and brought to Ellwood for a proper burial and here it still rests today. While you may go to "see the arm", be sure to also visit and explore the story of Ellwood and its connection to the armies involved in the conflict. Recently finished is a remarkable exhibit detailing Ellwood's service as a hospital following the 3 battles that occurred within a few miles of the farm. See more..
  5. 4.0 Lake of the Woods Golf Course (2 reviews)
    - Challenging By Accident
Spent More than 3 hours Golf Courses
Some tough holes on this course, especially #9. Many pull in one direction or another, homes all the way around. It is a nicer course now, particularly with the new sprinkler system and more devoted attention from the staff. A good pro, nice shop in the clubhouse and you will have an enjoyable time on the course. See more..
  6. 3.0 Rapidan Golf Club (1 review)
    - Average Experience in Nearly Every Way
Spent More than 3 hours Golf Courses
Tried to play as many courses in the area as I could before I moved and Rapidan was one of the last on my list. A friend had played previously and didn't review highly but I went anyway since my wife had purchased a heavily discounted pass. Apparently, Rapidan was once Somerset Country Club but changed hands. It appears at this point to be a fairly low budget operation. There's little to no pro shop to speak of and the bar/dining area is quite limited. The layout of the course is interesting as it's a hilly track that runs through a creek bottom for a portion. We more intensive maintenance it could be a very enjoyable play but the condition of the fairways and greens was pretty poor. If one lived in the area, it would be a decent practice location but there are much nicer options in the same area. See more..
